So, I’ve decided I’m gonna build myself another UDS (left the last one behind last time I moved). I’m thinking about the charcoal basket and I’d like to improve over what I did last time. Had an idea:

What about using the base of my Weber jumbo joe as the basket? I wouldn’t use the lid and I’d fill that puppy full of charcoal. Seems like it would be enough charcoal and it comes with a handle that would make cleanup easy. Only issue I can think of is whether the ash would build up on bottom and snuff out the fire. I dunno. Thoughts welcome!

Maybe if you drilled a bunch of holes in it. I would think airflow would be an issue.

Seems easy enough to make one or buy a pre-made one instead.

Good idea to make another UDS.

I imagine the JJ base would hold coal and heat a drum- just not sure how well.

A good firebasket is pretty cheap to put together - I'd personally look at a more conventional solution.

I just don't think you would get the burn times. I think the basket from uds parts is only like $40 which i think is money well spent.
