Tonight I have been using a combination of Kingsford Hickory Charcoal and Hickory Wood Pieces. The results have been great keeping my smoker between 250-300F. My question is when using the hickory chunks, do you soak them ahead of time like you would the hickory pieces? I have been throwing them in their dry.

You want smoke...not steam...

I don't soak wood chips or wood chunks.

I have soakd the chips in the past, but I like how this is going better with the dry wood chunks.

I've just started smoking but have been grilling for many moons and I never had good luck soaking chips.
Dry chips is all I've used for several years and nobody has complained about my food.

Just curious what is the preference charcoal or wood as fuel?

Would you use all hickory or combine it with other wood such as oak?

They finished in 6.5hrs just the time I need for the competition this weekend. Thank you everyone for your advice.
