With all the hype on the use of a vortex and Weber 22" grill, i used the original charcoal baskets for a few of my cooks. Read a lot of posts about them. Decided i will make my own.

Made a flat cone template out of some poster cardboard. Large dia. 12",small dia. 8" by 4 3/4 " high. Went to a local scrap yard for some 16 ga.
material large enough for my template. Removed a door from an arcade machine and paid the guy $10 bucks for it.

Weed burner did a good job removing the paint. Did the layout again on the metal and used my Saber saw to cut it out using a metal saw blade.

Not owning a roll forming machine i decided to use 2 pieces of aluminum bar stock and "C" clamps to make the make a brake every 10*. 4 3/16 steel pop rivets holding everything together. Cant wait to try it out.

Great job on the Vortex. I was going to make one since I have a plasma cutter and a slip roll to form it but I had no luck finding any scrap steel large enough and it was cost prohibitive to buy new by the sheet so I just went to Amazon and ordered one. Hope it works well for you. There is satisfaction in building yourself.

Looks good, but you definitely did it the hard way. It's easier to just buy a metal mixing bowl and cut the bottom off.

You are right about doing it the hard way. For me ,it was a challenge. There is nothing hard about cutting the bottom out of a mixing bowl. I know that my vortex will last for a long time.
