That is not a bad price.

Figure a thermo and a couple of grates are gonna set you back @ $50+, brass ball valves are not cheap either, one or two rattle cans of paint and no telling what the materials to fab the charcoal basket might have cost, plus it's an open drum with a lid-is it new used or reconditioned?

Hard to tell if it's a 30 0r 55 gallon barrel, but I'm guessing it's a 55. He does say he's building 2 more, so give him a call and check it out. Looks like he did a good job.

Factor in the time to build and parts and he's not making a killing on anyone.

Just make sure there's no liner in it. I think the interior shots are from another cooker. I see a lot of drums on CL with the liner still in there.

Clearly, he is doing these for resale. Given that it was a special order that was bailed on, he might flex on price... It looks like a solid build and if you are not interested in the actual build part of a UDS it is a decent price IMO.

I'd like to see a pic of the fire basket before I give an opinion. But if the fire basket is decent, that's a nice price for a cooker that will simply work with no hassles. You could always hunt for a bargain 18.5" kettle for a dome lid.

from the ad... "It is built from a 30 gallon oil drum."

Ah, no thanks. I don't care how much it's burnt in, seasoned, blasted and cleaned, these things are too plentiful and cheap brand new to go futzing with anything that once held oil.

Even if it's a misuse of the term 'oil drum,' it's too much $ for a pre-fab drum. All ya need is a drill, a stop bit, some bolts, a grate, and yeah, something to hold your charcoal. The fun of a UDS is in the buildin', too.

No not a good deal imo, you can buy a Big Poppa Smoker kit for 140 and that thing is dialed in. Smoke , grill and sear...looks great and is proven. Oh can't for get the bottle opener ;)

Guys build and sell 55's for $300-$350 around here- of course they r powder coated which costs more -- 30 gal would be same price........

I'd say its a good price. But I have no free time to build a drum so you have to make the decision as to how much your time is worth. Many guys forget that when they think that building a UDS is a cheap project. That is the exact reason why I had a local friend and UDS builder, build one for me. He had the time, I didn't.

I would get clarification on "oil drum" if it's vegetable oil maybe, otherwise I would move on down the road. There are a lot of other question marks such as high temp paint? Charcoal Basket? Liner? Stainless steel hardware & etc? Would be nice if there were feet underneath. They go for a lot more $ around here but I think the craftsmanship is also pretty good.

Personally I got a lot of joy out of building my own.
