Finally getting around to starting on smoker build. CC is out of 120 gal tank 3/16” thick with ends cut off. Firebox will be 2” insulated with damper on bottom. Plan to add a window on FB door and entry will be at grate level and directed to top before coming down into CC. Think pitmaker vault but false wall wont extend that far up. Prob 6” above grate level. Likely take another 1-1.5 month to finish

Here is progress so far

Ha. Thats what pops said. Screw smoker and put engine on it

One thing I forgot to mention is I am getting ready start new hobby of forging knives. Will be making my own hydraulic press after this but thought fun process would be to forge hinges and handles out of handmade damascus. Anyone have dimensions of Jambo style CC door hinges?

That’s a really solid start! 5hp motor, there’s a way to get these heavy smokers around, self propelled!

Looking forward to this build.

Speaking of self-propelled smokers, Phillip Kirkpatrick of Big Phil's Smokers told me that a maker he knows (I think he said Millscale, but not 100% on that) recently built a 250-gal smoker that incorporated a motor and control system from one of those walk-behind pallet stackers. He said it worked great, especially for loading on a trailer, but the cost of the propulsion system was higher than the cost of the smoker itself, so I'm guessing it came out in the range of $15-20k total.

Able to get ends cut off today. Took a long time and quite a few discs but got it done. Thickness is actually closer to 1/4”. About 1/32” shy. A lot taller looking in person than on paper. Height to top of CC is 52”. Center line 40” and shelf will be around 37”. Burn out happening tomorrow

Nice! Still enough room for that motor below the cook chamber…

Trust me. I was taking measurements for a motor. Im 50/50 on it

Anyone have dimensions to style of hinges Outlaw/Jambo uses? I am gathering material for anvil and metal forge and want to start working on those over holidays. Since I am doing everything by hand and no press or power hammer I likely will only be able to make 2-2.5” wide billet

Getting work done on smoker thru holidays has been a PIA. To save money I bought a bunch of 3/8” plate scrap and welded pieces together and somewhat smoothed it out. Areas that I had to fill in was 1/4” flat bar. 90% of FB is 3/8 and remaining 1/4”. Doesnt look pretty on inside and out but since insulated wont be able to see. FB as is weighs about 265lb. Got air damper done and fb/cc opening cut. Picking up 5x10 piece of 1/8” tomorrow and insulation for outer shell. Debating on using my 6” sch 40 pipe or 4.5 stainless pipe for exhaust stack.

Also tank is now permanently attached to cart and started filling in pitting, grind marks, hole patches with jb weld and will sand smooth before paint

Nice work!

With the outrageous price of steel, can't say I blame you using scraps.

It'll work.
