I have a couple pics here, but if anyone has a site to help determine tree type, that would be awesome. I think it may be a White Ash, but I don't know yet...
What type of tree do I have here?

never seen any nuts/flowers/seeds or whatever but these little guys just came off before the leaves kicked in... they are all over my front yard... lol

Just kidding. I'm thinking Ash based on those seeds, but maybe we need a professional opinion and not my guess. he leaves look kinda like some ash trees i've seen, but are also different enough that I'm a little uncomfortable giving a positive ID.

That's definitely an Ash Samara. But kind of an unknown as to which one. Could be green ash, white ash, or some other ash. I'm thinking either white or green. Do you have a pic of the whole tree itself?
If I had to bet on it, I'd say white ash.

If it's a type of Ash, that's good enough... then I was right in my assumption... What sparked all of this was I was breakin in the new UDS, and with all the commotion of the UDS I completely forgot that I ran out of wood... so needless to say, I couldn't go anywhere as I was working, and needed some "smoke" for my seasoning... I remembered that I had a large portion of the tree in my front yard break off a few months ago due to some storms we had... so i saved a lot of it for firewood... so I figured what the hell... I'd rather try this out on some $4 chicks than a nice butt, brisket, ribs, etc. I was very please with the flavor of the smoke in the chicks, so looks like I may not need to buy wood for a while... :biggrin:

I see you've got your answer basically, but I can say with reasonable certainty (I've had one) that it is an Arizona Ash. That is what is most commonly sold here (N TX) in the nurseries because it is fast growing hard wood. However, the landscape experts here consider it a trash tree since it is susceptable to pests, disease and breaks in storms. The developers use it because it's cheap and it grows fast. Probably more info than you want but now you know.

That's good to know. I haven't heard of using ash for smoking. I guess nobody's throat swelled shut. :shock: Does it compare to anything you've used before? Maybe you're on to something new.

well someone had to use it cause it's part of the wood breakdown on the bandera 101 document:
ASH - Fast burner, light but distinctive flavor. Good with fish and red meats.
and apparently good for chicken too... LOL
