Default Riviting items to my uds

Can't seem to get to sleep tonight so thinking about smokers and bbq as usual. I am going to add tube intakes to my drum and was wondering if the aluminum rivits would cause an issue. Should be food safe since alot of beverages come in aluminum, but was wondering if there would be a temp issue?

What say ye Brethren o' mine?!

It was brought to my attention that aluminum as a metal melts at 550F.

Cool wasn't sure of its melting point. That was my concern. I'll just bolt them on! Always look for reasons to by new tool. Thanks man.

Well damn, I had no issues extending my charcoal ring then. This was in the UDS thread.

Aluminum rivits are easy to work with and should be plenty strong for what you are doing. I prefer stainless rivits although if using a hand tool it will take quite a bit more strength to squeeze it.

The aluminum rivets should/will work w/o problem. Some brand cabinet smokers are aluminum riveted inside and out.

Just use stainless steel rivets, as Shagbark has mentioned

I would vote for stainless also, higher melting point and from my experience they seem to hold the clamp load better.

Don't use aluminum, it can cause a corrosive reaction(can't recall the term) when dissimilar metals are in contact with each other.

Electrolysis? ?

You’re right aluminum doesn’t play well with other metals and in some cases it doesn’t even get along with itself. In a smoker where it will probably get a good coating of grease I don’t believe it will be an issue. Contact with air and moisture seem to be the key ingredients for the corrosion to occur. Aluminum and steel usually isn’t a problem. Aluminum and brass will eat each other up in a very short time.

With aluminum electrical wiring a paste is used to prevent corrosion at the connection.

I wouldn't spend the money for stainless unless I already had them in my shop. Plain steel will work just fine and that is what your UDS is made out of anyway. Stainless UDS?!!? Then stainless rivets.

Even when my temps get away from me, I've never managed to melt any aluminum foil...
