An odd stick-burner
There's this beast of homemade smoker sitting out in E TX that I've been offered for free, if I can figure out how to move it. They say it will take at least 3 strong men, or something like a front-end loader.
It seems odd to me because there is no firebox - the fire is made in a small area on the left side. It hasn't been cooked on in 21 years, but it is all still solid. Needs a lot of wire brushing and high-temp paint. No lid stop, and the lid is extremely heavy. Pretty sure I'm going to pass on it, but thought I'd share the pics with y'all. Maybe this configuration is more common than I think it is? Front Back Side Fire area Cooking grate

Funny how time works. There was a period in my life where if you told me something hadn't been cooked on in 21 years I would think it was an antique because it was so old. Now 21 years ago means it was cooking in 2000. I don't know if I would have the gumption to tackle that project, but I would like to see what would happen if someone did.

I've seen several like that except they had larger doors to add charcoal or wood chunks. They are kind of a grill/smoker kind of thing. And the fire end is hotter for sure. I helped a friend make a solid shield plate that fit directly over the fire and as long as they draft okay they are a decent cooker. I wish I had better photos, but I've cooked a ton of meat on this one.

I had a very big drum like that, air inlet and fire one end , over the food and out the chimney.
Cooked some awesome sheep in it, was an old industrial water service

Reminds me of a Tiernan but I don't think they have a side access to add fuel. If it's heavy gauge steel I'd take it.

Wouldn't take much to add a firebox to it.

Add a fire box and some paint you have a nice cooker. I would love a project like that.

My Tiernans all have had internal fireboxes. Multiple set ups. I’ve a friend who puts his firebox on the stack side. Less smoke same heat. I’ve also surrounded meats with coals.
They make great grills for reverse direct or direct reverse. Internal fireboxes the only downfall is a dirty smoke is pretty noticeable. |
