First off, I have two Kindles and really like them. For novels. For reference materials I find them terrible. I like bound paper where I can thumb my way to where I want to be, the search and goto functions of e-books are maddening exercises of futility.

Thrift stores are great places to find cheap reference books, from old time BBQ to how to fix that '46 Chevy. And by "thrift store" I mean not just Goodwill and Salvation Army, but those want to be fancy shmancy "Antique Stores".

Me, a Luddite? No, but you can make a good argument for Contrarian.

I love my kindle, but I do not like it for reference books, eg. cookbooks. With a bound paper book I can easily and quickly thumb to the page I want, using the 'goto' on a kindle is a pita. Even with the bookmark utility, it is still a pain.

How do you guys handle that?

I agree. I don't handle it because I'm not that good at using my fire tablet.
But i get the books when they are free or a dollar so the inconvenience of the tablet is worth it for the little or no money spent.

But yeah, i really hate using the tablet or computer for referencing things.
