So long as the coals are fully lit before cooking, it doesn't really matter. I'm just cheap, I guess. People keep sending me newsprint to use in my charcoal chimney, why buy fluid?

It does take awhile for a chimney full to get ready.

You are quite right. It takes one very enjoyable, quality beer. Or a game with the dogs.

When I'm firing up a chimney full of charcoal, I wet the newsprint with lighter fluid. I find it speeds up lighting the charcoal a bit, but without any risk of giving off flavours to the charcoal or smoke, because the lighter fluid never touches or soaks into the charcoal.

I’ve been using a torch to light my charcoal for two years. Did it once on a camping trip and never looked back. My chimney just hangs out under my grill like last years Christmas presents.

Paraffin cubes. No smell, no flying ash.

(Every time I use newspapers, there's enough smoldering paper ash wafting out of the chimney that I picture them naming the resulting wildfire after me )

This.

A torch is the only way I get my lump charcoal going too. It can be a bit "snappy" and you need to protect yourself from flying bits of lit coal, but it's all part of the fun. Keeping some previosly lit coals as the starter base helps a lot, because lighting old lump will not spark up.
