Default Auber controller for WSM?

A friend just bought a WSM 18.5 and he's looking at this temp controller:

http://www.auberins.com/index.php?ma...roducts_id=170

Anyone have any feedback on these?

I've never seen one, but it might be worth a try.

Interesting.I would think it would blow ash on the food if it blows hard enough to make the coals glow.not to metion it could eat up coal on a long cook.I don't know just my two cent's.

I have seen other people mention units from this company. I think they do well. Personally I would just go with an iQ110 though as it seems to be very simple and effective.

the mounting device, while neat concept, I think would give over time.

I have one that I have had for several years, I made a bracket to hold it and a thermo for meat. i bought a fan and adaptor from Stoker and it works great. I use it on my egg all the time, once you figure out the settings and alarms it works just as advertised. When I bought mine they didn't offer the fan and adaptor.

I have the stoker, they have an adapter for the WSM as well. They are kind of spendy, but nobody beats there bells and whistles! I LOVE my stoker!

Thanks for the feedback... I passed this along to him. His WSM is arriving today and he's planning an overnight cook on it tonight. I tried to steer him towards the iQue 110 since he wants a lower priced control unit so we'll see what he decides to do.

He's used to cooking on an offset but his smoker has rusted out pretty bad because he doesn't have a covered area to keep it or a cover for the smoker. He has been watching my evolution with the WSM and decided to give one a try...

Bought one recently, haven't had a chance to use it yet. Lot of leaks to plug in firebox. Check out the Naked Whiz review, very detailed.

Oh how I wish it was that easy, it has a nice sheen to it though even if a bit..tacky? Also since the wish fairy may be listening, oh how I wish I had a welder.

My offset smoker is facing the same demise. Too many winters uncovered... Charbroil Silver Smoker... she was my first, and has been very good to me. I've had my eye on the WSM's but can't convince myself that having the fire right below the food is a good idea... can't imagine you'd get LOTS of smoke without LOTS of heat...

interesting... he's complaining now about the iQue people wanting $26 to ship it to him.. he lives in the St. Louis area... that does seem a little steep for ups ground shipping...

I also had a Chargrill silver for years, and had the same concerns about the WSM, but I bought one and would never go back. With the deflector pan in the middle you get lots of smoke without a lot of heat, and doing a 12 hour cook on one load of charcoal is a great thing.

Thanks for the post John, yeah I'm the cheap guy who just spent all his money on a 18.5 WSM and won't fork over the $26 to ground ship the Ique 110. Just seems like robbery to me.

On another note my WSM arrived at 5:30 last night, was together by 6, and was up to temp and cooking meat by 6:30. I took the butt off at 7PM this am and it was oohh so good. I am so happy I bought it, much easier then my side smoker, may she rest in peace. But I would like a controller. I'd post photos but apparently I can't do it from my flickr account LOL
