It works great on whole spares, because they have flavor on their own that SnP accentuates. Loinbacks are bland and need something else to give them flavor.
I dont even bother with loinbacks unless they are on sale. salt and pepper spares are awesome to me. most prefer when I good them with traditional bbq rub and wrapped with sauce. to me the s & p ribs tastes more porkierer
