Santa Maria Grill Project
For an unnamed client, initial drafts of a portable BBQ unit and a permanent fire pit. For some reason (wife) and the landscape designer (not me) the pit got smaller and the request was made that the Santa Maria grate be removable (I would never do this) so I am working on this as a proposed first draft (last time I recommend someone for a job, I can't believe she told the client to not have a permanent pit, like it would be an eyesore or something). Most of unit would be carbon steel with heavy fire proof industrial coating, hand wheel and possibly grate may end up stainless steel.
Don't try and guess who this is for, I ain't telling. I am also thinking the grate will have a rigid, level frame, octagonal in shape due to round fire pit desired (I wanted square, actually, I had a great design for a rectangular pit with a fire pit and a coal ramp to allow for starting a fire on open side and raking coals once hot but NOOOO, that would be unsightly). Current grate would offer 3.5 square feet of cooking surface, so slightly more than a Weber 22.5" (2.94s.f.). Obviously although adjustments can be made, currently, there would be almost 24" of adjustable grate height above the top of the fire pit. I am still considering the idea of a fire grate about 12"below the top of the pit edge, which would allow another 6" of adjustment below the top edge of the fire pit.

I saw a post the other day where you could buy a portable santa maria grill at Costco for like $300. That would be a lot cheaper and easier for the wife to hide.

Wait......PORTABLE?
What's the plan, to be able to throw it in the back of the ole pickup and drive it to the campground? It's made of structural steel, cast iron, precast concrete, stone veneer, etc.! They gonna snatch it up with a refrigerator dolly???? Or is it just the santa maria grill part that's to be removable? Still......doesn't seem practical to call it "portable". Is it Martyleach? .......since you said not to ask did you REALLY think that wouldn't happen?

I don't care who it's for, but so far it's looking like some very nice design work going into that. The grill part simply lifts out of the fire pit it looks like and the steel tubing really saves on the weight...

I don't really care either Guerry.....just tryin to stir it up since it's Woodpile and all.....
I do like the design as well. Steel tubing is still pretty farkin heavy, what with all the parts involved on that thing.

Agreed, tubing is heavy and it'll take a couple people to lift it out but still...It could be considered "portable"

I am hoping his wife doesn't realize this thing will weigh 185 lbs and is portable in name only . Actually, 7 ga. structural steel is not that heavy, it is the stuff we make handrails and light weight fences out of. But, the unit needs weight to be stable during cooking. I also considered sleeves, but, that still only saves some weight. I am designing it so that the grate can be removed from the mechanism, so there will be two pieces to move.
