Large smoker lid assist

I've got a simple homemade 275 gal oil drum cooker that I want to add some sort of lid opening assist mechanism. I'm debating between a counter balance weight or some sort of gas strut assist or spring assist.

Can anyone with a gas strut assist, spring assist, or other (non welded on counter balance) mechanism please post pictures of your set up so I get get some ideas?
