Rednecked Ugly Drum Smoker

Multitudes of Information

Sweet N8man....Looks great ....I'm planning my first UDS as we speak...Been talkin to swamprb and got some great ideas...I'll be pesterin' Mista and a few others as well along the way!! Let us know how it cooks....with pics of course:mrgreen:
I had been lurking here for a while and gathering all the information
I could before starting my build....lots of good ideas in all the
threads about the ugly drum smoker.....Bigmista's drums rules!!! As
do they all!!!! Here's to the Drum Corp, (taking big swig of Wild Turkey!!!)

how big is the pipe? 2"? how is it attached at the bottom and is sheet magnet just a normal magnet? i am getting ready for version 3 and those are some neat ideas

Size Does Matter!!!

2" pipe for exhaust threaded into bung hole..
1" pipe for air intakes...I used a 1.25" hole saw for drilling
3 evenly spaced holes around the bottom of the drum, centered 1.75"
from the bottom, then threaded 1" pipe nipples into the holes and
secured with 1" conduit lock nuts on the outside of the drum.

The vertical pipe is 30"s long and keeps an
old fat man from rolling on the ground!!!!
Sheet magnets are available at Craft and Hobby Stores.
As long as they aren't near the heat, they work wonderful!

Goes right in..

That drum smoker is really nice looking, but the pipe nipples just took it to a whole new level for me.
With a brand new 1.25" hole saw making the holes, those pipe nipples
just thread right in like it was meant to be...And tight!!! With the conduit
nut locked down I can lift the barrel by the 30 inch vertical pipe like it
was a handle... Hmmmm...I think I'm going to install another of those on the
other side.....shoooottt yeah!!!!!

Looks really great. Inspires the rest of us who haven't made one yet to get up off the couch and DO something. I need one of those!

i thought that maybe you only had 1 air intake. I am wondering if on my next drum if i put a 2.5" intake if that would work instead of having multiples.

Now I'm confused. In the picture I could only see one air intake-the pipe running from the bottom all the way to the top.

Are there actually two more 1" air intakes with no pipe running to the top? Does the 30" pipe keeps an old fat man from rolling on the ground only 1/3 of the time? Are the two bottom ones mostly plugged, as shown? Do you use the sheet magnets on the other two also? Sorry to be so dense.

Many a hole

I do have three evenly spaced, one is vertical, but during yesterdays
seasoning and cook I only had the vertical open and choked. Held 250
all day and part of the evening..I started at 7:00 am and shut it
down last night at 9:30 pm or so...still had charcoal in the basket!!!!!
I watched a video in the recent past that was linked here in one of the posts about Snail and his drum smokers, I think he has one air intake..looked like it could be around 2" or so.. I went with the 1"
because of the hole saw I had and it's working out well. Before I
shut it down last night I opened all intakes wide open and the temp
reached 475 degrees!!!!! You should of heard the grease sizzling and popping... By the way I like your versions of the drum smokers also..Inspired me along with others...

well somewhere in the next few months i will try a single air intake. my step bit goes to 1.75 inches so I will try a single air intake. It should work

Good looking drum. Maybe I can convince the missus that I need to do something like that.

I'm interested in seeing your'n....I liked the pix of your basket and ash catcher...I'm looking for something suitable in my own application

I have been Super Busy here Man...Mine is till in Parts in the Garage...hoping to get back on that project in the near future, will post pics when it is done! It just hope it looks as good as Yours!!

He said bung hole.

Heh. Heh-heh...

Nice drum smoker ya got there. I gotta couple questions. 1st:Does that thing got Hemi in it?
Does that intake draw air well? I guess it doesn't matter that it's that high up? I like the magnets, good idea.
That is not my patented lid hook design. ( :
