Large charcoal grill ?

Besides a 26" Kettle ( too small) and a Weber Ranch ( too expensive) what other large charcoal grills are out there. I work at a non profit 90 drug counseling center and the kitchen grills once a month. They have been renting rectangle open grills about 60" long x 20-24" wide but they are shalllow and have no charcoal grate so ash chokes coals and drippings cause big flare ups with no lid. The kitchen staff wants the facility to buy something about that size but better with a lid. They feed about 60-70 a day at lunch an 100 at Dinner so they'll grill 300 hotdogs or 70-100 hamburger plus 100 dogs or like today - 100 chicken qtrs. Took 3 loads of the grill. Being Non profit they are Poor so big grills from Lonestar grills or Pitmaker or such is too expensive. Any suggestions ?

They rent this type : something like this but deeper with a charcoal grate and lid would be ideal.

grab a 250 gallon propane tank cut doors, add charcoal grate, cooking grate, and 2 exhaust stacks and bam your cooking in a closed grill environment and it will last forever! and cost you less than 1k I would mount on trailer axle and be done

check out some grills from Iron man jack in AL he builds this type and sells fairly cheap.

Those are some nice builds. Maybe some of the folks that are at the center have the skills to build something like this. Will give Em something to focus on for a while. I built mine pretty cheap. But, it took me a while to buy or scavenge stuff at scrap yards. Grocery stores and home improvement stores throw out lots of stuff you can use as grates and for the angle iron.

I miss my old grill, but after that party didn't have much use for it. Sold it for more than what I put into too, so worked out.

A double Drum would be perfect size - they just don't last that long. I can't weld drums - too thin I burn more holes than weld. And work can't reimburse me and it's a major hassle for them to buy parts n stuff from several sources ( everything single thing has to approved). Only way to buy used stuff is if it's from a store like a Used Resturaunt Supply.

Those Cheney Drum grills are out in Cali........something just like it in 1/8" rolled steel or a tank would be Perfect but too Expensive for this place.........

The propane tank sounds good to me.You might be able to get the time, labor, and material donated in your area for a good cause.Good luck.

I checked with Pits by AJ that built Peeps and Sliding_Billy's pits - 60" x 30" in 1/8" - $1100.
This place can't afford that.......

I agree on the drums and welding. I used self tapping screws in some areas in place of welds. Using another drum cut out as a charcoal liner helps them last a bit more. I bet those Cheney grills are made so that you could possible drop in a drum bottom if it needed replacement. The angle iron and framework they use is way more life lasting than the drums ever will be. Hope something affordable turns up for,you guys.
