I found this classic Brinkmann on Facebook marketplace place, cheap. It was five hours away, one way. Undeterred I made the deal and drove down to Nashville to pick it up. A little surface rust, but otherwise in great shape. I Spent some time with the grinder and wire wheel. Repainted with Krylon high temp grill paint. I also made a convection plate based on what Horizon sells. I also changed out the steel wagon wheels for some rubber tires. It rolls much better around my gravel drive. I can move the 700lb monstrosity by myself now. I still need to add a probe port and I think I will be done.

That is a good looking pit. Congratulations.

That is one funky (in a good way) looking smoker! I like it.

Nice find and rebuild. Worth the road trip it appears. Congratulations!

Curious as to where you sourced the wheels?
I need to replace the stock steel wheels on an Oklahoma Joe, and those look much better than a solid rim pneumatic tire.

They are wheelbarrow wheels. I found them at Menards. They are not cheep at $40 each but a rated to 300 lb a piece. Greaseable ball bearing. I figure it'll save me in medical cost, trying to move that heavy smoker. I should also note they are 15 and 1/2 in versus the 16 in wheels that I took off. It doesn't sit quite level now but it is slope towards a drain on my unit so I'm good with it.

Thanks for the wheel info Shannon. All good points.
Especially the saving the back part.
Been threatening to change the wheels out for while, but seeing your post, has been the catalyst to actually get it done. Proof positive that a picture is worth a thousand words.
Thanks again.

Bill

Yep 1/4 steel. Basically an Horizon Ranger. It would have been built by Roger Davidson (Joe Davidson's brother aka Oklahoma Joe) back when Roger's smokers were sold under the Brinkmann name.

So far I smoked some turkey breast for a church thanksgiving pitch in. I did that the day after I brought it home before I cleaned it up. I was pretty excited to use it. I did two bacon wrapped and one Texas style (just salt and pepper). The Texas style was by far the best. Sorry no pictures of that cook. I smoked some thick chops, wings and mac n cheese last weekend they turned out nice. The smoker is great to run. Much easer then my trusty old Char griller offset. I also run a UDS, but I really prefer the flavor from an offset.

Probe port

Probe port is installed. Required drilling a half inch whole through 1/4 inch steel. It requires some patience. I used gradually increasing bits and plenty of vegetable oil to keep the bits cool. I bought five of these things from a supply house to meet the minimum order. I might add one more. It will be nice to stop smashing probe wires with the heavy doors. Not sure why pictures are turned?...
