Lang Cleaning and Maintenance
Hello
I was looking to get some feedback on the right way to maintain my Lang smoker. There are a couple of things I do already:
After speaking to the Lang folks they recommend taking a wire brush to rust spots then spraying high temp pain on the smoker. Do folks do this? If so how often and how much do you take off? Also I noticed there is some rust inside the firebox. Doesn't seem like there is much I can do about that. Is there? The firebox seems to get the most rust even on the outside because of the paint peeling from the heat. Is this normal? What else should I be doing? Thanks Sam |
You have it exactly right. Sometimes instead of mineral oil on the firebox I use canola. I find it has a higher smoke point than the mineral oil. That will tend to help ‘season’ the firebox and help with the rust. I bought mine used. It was about 4 years old. I used a wire wheel on my drill, got all the rust, and repainted the firebox with high heat paint.
That lasted about a year. Now it’s peeling and rusting again. Probably an every other year thing? Don’t worry about rust inside the firebox unless it gets aggressive. Just clean out the ash. |
I guess there’s not much else to it then :-o

Well, sometimes you’ve got it nailed from the start. I’d say you’ve got it!

Perfect. I’ve been hanging out on these forums long enough so i should know a thing or two by now.
