He can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Norcoredneck http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/sh...ad.php?t=43943 measures 8" down from the top of the barrel for his lower grate. If the barrel is 33 1/2" tall (like mine), then the grate is 25 1/2" above the bottom of the barrel. If your charcoal basket is 2-3" above the bottom, then the grate is 22 1/2" - 23 1/2" above the basket. Also, the bottom of the barrel is not as low as the rim of the barrel, which is where many people measure from. Net result - it seems that there is some leeway in where you put the grate. |

I succesfully scored the Weber!
The cooking grates are a lil' rusty but I'll get them clean. The rest seems to be intact. Plus....the kettle fits perfect! So far spend:2 barrels and 1 Weber 57cm/22,5"= 45,00 euro's/58,00 dollars.....plus a little time and petrol.:-D |
Anyone with a flat lid drum have 2 racks inside? I know it will be a little tight if you move the top rack down 3 inches or so. But maybe if you moved both down 3inches or so it'll work.
Just wondering if anyone played around with any of these ideas. |

Biggs, I really like the idea of keeping the splice at the bottom...
Smoke rises, right? Weiser |
After about 8 cooks I've noticed quite a bit of liquid in the bottom of my UDS. I put some Floor Dry in to absorb it. Anyone else having this? I do not recall reading any commenys about this. Thanks!

I think that this is probably some condensation just finding the lowest point in the drum. Simply take a couple of wadded-up paper towels and give it a wipe. |

Well, you all have really inspired me. I just joined bbq-brethren.com thanks to this thread. I'm only half way through reading this thread, but I just finished my first UDS. Here are some pics, including my umbrella mod due to some heavy rain today.
Thanks for all the shared input and helpful advice. Good stuff. |

Hey Biggs98
Here is how I did one of my tall lids from a donor. This one is 6" tall and I took the lid and cut the center out with a sawzall using the lip as the guide, so it was a nice clean circle cut. I made the mistake of trying to force the drum piece to fit down into the lid piece. I thought I could make some cuts and get a flush fit, not to be. You can see the vertical cuts in the pics. Next time I will just set the lid piece on the lid piece straight and weld it like that. Works great, nice and tight. |

Oh, forgot to mention I put a handle on the top and one on the side. So I pull the lid off with both handles and then holding the side one hang it on one of the intakes on my UDG.

I've been a lurker here for quite some time. Just soaking up all of the good information that everybody is contributing. I finally pulled the trigger and build a UDS. It makes some darn good BBQ. Thank you everybody for contributing.

I finally joined up after lurking for awhile. Built my UDS thanks to this thread. I was sick of all the work required with my offset. Found some perfect drums, held coconut oil and had no liner. Finished up and I'm seasoning it now. Wide open its been running on 5#'s at 525 for about 4 hours now. Can't wait to Q on this sucker!

Figured I'd just as well post the one I made that didn't cost me one American penny right down to the free paint. Oh yeah it was weld free also.Still have to put the grates and valves on it.http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...Picture037.jpg

Dude that is way to cool!!! I love it, nice job!
|
Skidder is it just me or is that drum a bit on the short and stubby side?????
Nice work. |
Approximately 34" tall and 23-1/2" wide 55 gallons. I think that's normal. Also have a Weber rotisserie so I can add a grate or two. Just have to find more free grates. My goal was to make a totally weld free UDS that didn't cost a red cent. Goal achieved.

I just fired up my drum for it's maiden voyage.
took 9 minutes to get to 250 sitting pretty at 265 now stand by for future develepments |
i monkeyed around with the lid, and it spiked up to 295.
i closed everything off, and the temp wont drop. or at least it hasn't for about the past 30 mins. I started filling in some of the leaks around the lid with some foil to see if that helps. we will see |
Leaks around the lid? Is it a flat lid or a weber?
