BBQchef33 02-01-2010 10:55 PM

seems i need to clarify a few things.

1 - no where did i say anyone was offended, pissed off, or cranky about the "no pics, didn't happen" comments. No one was "offended". This is my, and the moderating teams observation and we are being proactive in bringining it out before it gets worse.

2 - I also stated "it would be appreciated if its done with discretion" . So, no we are not saying never use it. There are times pics are a MUST, as in when its needed to present the details required to intelligently answer questions.... there is a time and place for everything and there are times when its just not necessary or funny any longer. I am however talking about Qtalk and Comp for the most part.

I appreciate all of you who understand our stance and appreciate our taking a proactive approach in catching this early.. it seems there is a high majority of members in agreement, both publicly and privately. Thanks for supporting our stance. :eusa_clap:eusa_clap:eusa_clap

However, it seems some folks may not agree with this direction,(not based on this thread) thats fine, don't agree.. but its still going to be enforced and if that means deleting posts, so be it.

JiveTurkey 02-01-2010 11:53 PM

Thanks Poobah! I know I've refrained some cookouts on my wine barrel because my camera broke after taking a pic of a ribeye on the smokey joe. Got too hot to the fire and cooked it. Wish I had a picture of that!

Now can you create a thread about how the UDS is not the answer to every new smoker build? :-D

I do that for a reason.

I've been accused of being the 800-lb gorilla when I post because 'Im me" as I've been told. Sometimes, when BBQchef33 posts, its taken as moderator, admin, as I'm passing judgement, making rules, etc.. When actually, its just me messing around.

problem is, I need to be (Bbqchef33) 99.99% of the time and occasionally .01% I need to be ADMIN. This holds true for the moderatores who post as themselves most of the time, but occasionally have to step into a suit and sunglasses and post AS MODERATOR.

So I can either login as Admin, which is a pain in the butt, I loose the setting in my cookies, and folks cant be sure which of the admins(me, jorge, or badger) are posting. Or i can put in an ADMIN NOTE: And post in red under my regular ID. That way its clear I'm posting as ADMIN and it is taken seriously, and not just glanced over or ignored.

Green is a very good color. It is the one true color. And, did I mention? It is also the fastest. :-D

On a more serious note, I, too, am guilty of not posting because I had no pictures. Thanks for making this clear. Sometimes I just don't have my camera handy ... or, my hands are covered with sauce, brine, or something else that doesn't need to be in my phone or camera.

C-Town Smoker 02-02-2010 05:07 AM

I agree with Phil on this thread...being a forum owner myself (of substantially less success) there is a unwritten rule a lot of my members have that goes something like "No pics = No Cook". While some do it in a joking tone, I would hate to think I would lose a new member because they feel the pressure to take photos and face ridicule if they don't post the porno. How many times can you see a pork shoulder or a sliced brisket...and not become a little desensitized...you know, like REAL PORNO? (NTTAWWT):wink:

And unlike Phil, I really enjoy throwing my weight around my own forum and banning people and making myself feel important...it helps me deal with the harsh reality of being a loser in real life!:shock::confused::oops::roll::-P

bbq ron 02-02-2010 06:20 AM

i think you are right on. i have posted a few threads and don't put pics up for you all to see, just because i have dial up INTERNET and it takes to much time. there for it didn't happen right. i now will post more of what i did and also without pics. thanks :-P:-P

Does this mean I can just TELL you guys about Pics 'O Cicks and you will beleive me?

Great!! Now what am I going to do with all of the beautiful "Babes of BBQ" pictures with no one to look at them?

This is such an awesome site with awesome people. The only site i've ever actually paid to be a part of. Q'ing has become such a great hobby that benefits me and everyone around me at that time. Unless I start drinking too much and forget about the meat then you know how it goes. :)

RAYSOR 02-02-2010 07:36 AM

Thanks, I really enjoy the site you have created and appreciate your envolvement keeping it so good.

B3 02-02-2010 08:23 AM

Agreed.

I work for an online training company and a common practice at work holds true on this forum as well: photos enhance learning, but they are not required to learn. I've learned tons from the brethren, and most of it did not come from photos.

River City Smokehouse 02-02-2010 10:53 AM

I can see where the mods are coming from. Those who are new and don't understand the BS'ers we have here may be a bit confused and perceive it wrong. I am a guilty party of posting the "NPDH" a lot and only out of pure onryness. I don't think any of the people who are doing it are doing it to be mean or hateful. I sometimes forget we have new members here and they don't even have a clue how to navigate this site, only to feel they are being attacked because they didn't post a pic when they asked a question.

BBQ_MAFIA 02-02-2010 10:56 AM

I always look forward to seeing the pics from everyones cooks. I would never want anyone to feel pressure on this, especially if it kept a brother from posting.

As for me, I don't even have a camera. If it weren't for Mrs Mafia I wouldn't have any pics, never mind trying to post them.

Here Here! Toast! Thanks Poobah.

Afraid I'm one of those mutants who rarely has a camera close by, and I HATE cell
phones, so usually it and the damn camera thingy on it are usually banished to the
glove box. To be called, or worse, inferred a liar because I'm not a document every
flipping instant of my life twitter-kid... No thanks.

However, the other side is fun, when you really fark something up, ala grande...
No pics; didnt happen! Woooo Hoooooooooo...

Actually, not. I prefer that if/when I fark something up beyond all recognition,
I prefer to draw some lesson from it, if possible. That, or just another reason
to enjoy the scotch at hand.

Kudos.

There are plenty of other forums where people grumble if photos aren't full-size and spot-on for color and clarity. Oh, and don't ask them to click a thumbnail, either.

Also, if you keep a running log to match your photos you can learn how alcohol impairs motor skills...:icon_devil

Why???

Please don't say it was Rollei TLR or Pentax 645/67 stuff or then I'll  too...

And FWIW, anybody who has a 35mm film camera shouldn't feel deterred from posting. For about $3 or so (at least around here) Walgreens will make you a CD of .JPG files when you get your film developed.

Admin note:

one more time.

it seems some folks have chosen to take this thread to an extreme opposite of what I intended and scatter snide comments in other threads in qtalk and comp. If anyone needs it spelled out again, I did NOT say not to post pics, I simply said its OK if you don't.

Our member base grows every day, and this thread as well as numerous PMs to me on this subject has proven that the we were right in our thought process in that folks were either intimidated or are just NOT posting because they don't have photos. That is NOT how we operate. No one should feel uncomfortable here, especially when it comes to sharing information. In the case of our photos in posts, we want both.. posts with photos AND photoless posts. That is NOT unreasonable.
For those that normally post pics, great, and thank you, but for those that were sitting on the side lines not posting to avoid being jabbed with a fork for being photoless, pleasenow feel free to post your experiences, sans photos.

Im not amused by the sarcasm and jabs being thrown around qtalk regarding this thread. It is not often that I post something as the founder of this forum to adjust our direction or reinforce our culture, and when I do I expect it to be understood and not ridiculed. If you do not like whats is posted here, there are plenty of other forums for you to visit.

If any one person continues to push that envelope, they will find themselves under full moderation until they get the point, where any and all of their posts will need to be reviewed and released by a moderator before it goes public. If it continues, you will be locked out permanently. I hate to be a prick about this, but i don't like anyone poking me in the eye.

On edit.. folks, this is NOT referencing any of the normal OT banter in this thread.

Except for the odd fact that there are always cameras at the Brethren Bashes, and there are always photos taken that probably should not have been shared.

BBQ Chef
I am glad that you made remarks concerning the posting or not posting of pictures. I once posted about a catering event that we did and someone posted that if there were no pictures then it didn't happen. It may have been a joke to them, but to me it said "You are a liar." I replied that my saying is "If you are not holding a check it didn't happen.

As a result of these posts I basically quit posting. I do what I do and people that know me also know what I do---I really didn't need to post here and be called a liar.

So posting of pictures can intimidate some people, or snide remarks about not posting pictures can infuriate others.

Once again thanks for addressing this issue.

If there is anyone left who just doesn't get it, I will point out that chuckwagons reaction is NOT unique. Since posting this thread, i have received NO LESS than 20 private messages from members stating similar reactions. Some stopped posting completely, others just dont share experiences, or do it less.

I hope at this point, its a closed issue and the points made. The redundant "no pic, didn't happen" phase here needs to be reduced.. a time and place for everything and use discretion.

I hope, in the future, when members see issues like this that can become a widespread or ongoing problem, point it out to us.. we take the stuff seriously and will work to correct things where we can.

and Chuckwagon... the coast is clear. :) start posting again!! :)

KuyasKitchen 02-02-2010 09:59 PM

Since we're clarifying things here, I would appreciate it if I post a thread where I've totally farked up a cook ... please, please, please tell me "no pics, didn't happen". My ego will thank you. :-D

BBQChef, in a way, for me, your posts make me want to post more pictures. I feel more comfortable posting. So, I'll thank you publicly for making this place more friendly.
