i know all about the more practice the better you get.but dog gone this will be the third weekend in a row of practice and i just bought the meat for this weekend and it was another 180.00. stating to get real expensive.but i have acquired alot of bbq eating friends lately

Take that $180 x 3 weekends you could have paid for a class and help take the learning curve out. This is just my thoughts and another reason for the old question "Are the high dollars for the classes worth it?".

Where are you getting your meat?? For practice purposes I use what's readily available and inexpensive. I can cook 3 racks of ribs, a brisket, and a couple of butts for under $75. However, I normally just do one meat each week...which helps keep the cost down.

i was gonna say, a packer 14/lbs, 2 butts about 14lbs, 3 racks about 14lbs, at rd1.99 a lb...usually about 85 dollars out the door

My practice is on hold until after PE class next weekend. Then game on til the PB class at the end of March. If March is decent weather the month is gonna fly.

I agree with you. This is very abdictive and it's getting to where I dread shopping. It doesn't take long to drop $200.00 but it is worth it when you see the crowd get quite and the smiles on their faces and the compliments after they are done eating. I'm thinking about a part time job to pay for meat until I get good enough to try and start a catering business as a side line. The word is definitely getting out quick and I already have people starting to ask me to cook for get togethers and them supplying the meats. I definitely want to do the shopping and make the meat selections though. This has only happened since I joined the forum and learning techniques and practicing. Hard to turn out good food with poor quality meats. Thank you fellow brethern.

Here's a thought. Cook for your local Fire Department, and write it off as a charitable donation. That way you're getting your practice in and feeding the FD :wink:

I take orders from my co-workers, when I want to practice. and it usually covers all my expenses. Beside I am so sick of my own food and my co-workers thinks its the best thing since sliced bread
