Smoked Sweet Potato?
Throwing some babybacks on this afternoon and got a craving for some sweet potatoes. Anybody try smoking these before? My guess these are too dense and will probably have a hard time taking on smoke but its worth a shot.

Sounds like a plan to me. Regular tatos take on smoke flavor. Let us know. :-D

Not expecting greatness but fingers crossed.

They take a while, jsut like a regular potato. Split 'em open and toss on some butter, brown sugar and maybe even some marshmallows towards the end!:thumb:

Wasn't planning on opening them up but that's not a bad idea. Get more smoke into it and cut the cooking time down. Thanks bigabyte

I do sweet potatoes all the time ~ oil them and coat with kosher salt. Come out so sweet there's no need to add anything IMHO.

I throw sweet po's in all the time. That with some maple pecan butter (from Chris Lily's book - I think it's maple syrup, butter, pecans, and cayenne? not sure if that's complete or correct) - just fantastic!

^^^That sounds good!

I have used sweet potatoes to hold my temp probes in place over night. In the morning split them open hit with some butter and breakfast is served. Keith

Yeppers, smoked sweet taters are great. We like to put a little Garam Masala and butter on ours.

I'm one of the strange ones too with the flavor of sweet potato. I like to "twice bake" mine where I get them almost done, scoop out the middle and mix with butter, sourcream and bleu cheese and then put back in the skin to finish. Something about bleu cheese goes well with sweet potato IMO.
I'd think you could smoke them and then add the bleu near the end for really good sweet taters! |
Not smoked exactly, but we frequently throw them directly on the coals in the kettle or smoker, turn about every 15 min for about an hour total. We call them "cave man taters". They're black on the outside, incredibly good on the inside! I'll have to try smoking them sometime.

I smoke sweet taters a lot, get a bunch of smoke in them, then I mash them down with some milk, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Kids love it.
Wife hates sweet potatoes unless they're sweet tater fries. |
