Here is my CoalBasket, I'm using a mix of Lump and KF and on top
I've placed 17 lit Briquettes. This is my typical starting procedure.

Guys I am having the hardest time keeping the temps low in my UDS. I have a weber lid that I had to beat the lip flat and reshape around the barrel top, but I am not sure if that is the problem. The reason I say that is because I can close all intakes and the fire chokes out in about an hour or two.

Could it be that I am not burning my lump correctly? I think I may be using too much in the charcoal starter and then spreading it out too much as well. What I do is take about a half a chimney of lump, get it red, then spread on top of my lump already in the UDS. Any advice?

Here are some pics of my build:

I am assuming he was talking about the guage but i really dont know because i dont know much about expanded metal. Can someone let me know the preferred type of expanded metal used. I tried skimming back through this thread because i remember reading about it, but i could not find it.

Ideally, 3/4" 9 gauge, flattened.

Remember to bend it the opposite way that I did (see pic below)... make the diamonds point upward instead of around the basket... unless you're in for a workout! It's 5 times easier to bend that way. Other than that, you may want to check out my video (in my sig) on building a charcoal basket (and I think Norco has one too), so you can at least learn what NOT to do. :thumb:

I am going to try less lump and center it more to see if that helps out. Thanks so much for the advice. Here is what I have been doing before (from Jim Minion himself)

See how spread out his coals are? Maybe that's because he is using briquettes instead?

The drum has a thing brown/tan lining that should burn out easily since it is already scratched down to bare metal in one spot on the bottom. Here are some cell phone pics.:-D

One of these days I will finish painting that door and wall

Started the burn out back in February and life's interuptions just happen so here you go.

Doing the burn out and tossed the lid on to get it mostly burned but not warped so I finished it off with a small hand torch.

I finally got some free time in life to finish up the UDS this past Friday.

Cleaned & ready for seasoning, note I just finished rebuffing and washing the layer of rust out of it. Currently using magnets to control air flow and just the open 2" bung port for exhaust. Now just need to practice and learn some fire control.

The basket build:

I think I am going to make some removeable inserts out of some scrap to be able to hold a smaller, more compact mound of charcoal for shorter burns.

You have done a nice job of the build. As to the smaller basket I think you will find that it isn't really necessary since you control the fire with your intake and when you are finished you simply close the intake and exhaust and save the remaining coals for another day.

Thanks, I just need some more time and practice with it. The basket is 16" diameter and 8" sides so it does hold a lot of fuel, more than I would need to do a few chickens for the family.

I agree... that's what I did.

Ya know, I did mine the same exact way that you did and the "kernel" of burning coals seemed to tunnel downward more than spread outward. I got the impression that it'd burn more evenly if I had spread the coals out more evenly over about half of the top surface area of the charcoal basket. I don't know if this matters or not though. I'm running a 13.5" diameter basket and started up with 14 briquettes. Next time it'll be the recommended 12 briquettes... I had at least as much heat as I needed.

Why don't you guys wait until the coals ash over, then start cooking!!!! I believe that would take the guess work out of starting the fire basket and it not going out as easy whenever the intakes and lid is closed!!! Just a thought!!! Peppa!!!!

We want it to go out with the lid and intakes closed. Also if you let it all ash over your temps would be around 500 and uncontrollable.

OK, now I know...Knowledge is power....Thanks AJP

devious 04-01-2010 08:25 PM

this is how i do it(not that its the right way) I put my lit lump on one side and let it burn from left to right( or right to left ) thats my 2 cents:thumb:
