Great job Wyatt. |
After a couple burns "inside" the barrell, does it need wire brushed or something? Power wash? Thanks.
|
Wire brush would be good. I see you cheated and didn't read all 50+ pages!

Damn it man what a thread!!
Lots of good info. I will be working on a uds this weekend. |
Don't forget to post pics. Good luck.

I'll get my 18 year old to show me how. I thought I had ended my search for a smoker when I bought my Stump GF223 2 years ago. This thread has thrown me a curve ball! I can't wait to get started. I have been impressed! This site reminds me of Stumps site a year ago.

Sneak peek of UDS 2.0
Just "threw it together" tonite in about 2 hr's, may do a pictoral of the build later!! http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/1...pics028yk9.jpg |
Looks good to me...I like the draft valve up high so I don't have to bend over.
|
Well on your way Brother. Good job.
|
think i'm gonna do a couple for novelty but 1 question- how in the h*ll do ya get the ashes out ??? other than dump it or contaminate the pit ?

I flipped my drum upside down so I can just take off the band and lift off the barrel. I used a jigsaw and cut the top (bottom) out just inside the lip and my weber kettle lid fit on just right (although I did tweak the lid just alittle to get to fit easily). I while try to post pix some other time.

Hello all, 1st post. I am getting started tomorrow on building my own UDS. I have read thru this post and a couple others. Some answers to a few questions I have had been discussed.
I am still not clear on a few. Have access to 4 - 3/4 ball valves (father in law retired plumber) What has everyone found, is it better to have 4 intakes opened slightly for even heat or would 1-2 be good enough? What about extending the intake pipe to the top for ease, does the unit draw as well? It seems to me centering the exhaust would help draw the heat more evenly over the cooking grates. I do have a old Weber lid but I tried it and it looks like it would work but would blow off if a wind came up. It just sits on the rim, so close. Lastly, does anyone just let the ash fall into the bottom of the drum from the fire basket or would that burn out the bottom. I am still working on some way to build a basket without the need for welding. I am having a hard time finding some ideas on that one. BTW this forum has a bunch of great info already on the UDS. Can't wait to get started. Thanks! |
Norco, thanks for the heads up!

I still say some of you are forgetting the name. :) It is incredible this thread has that many views. One of these days I need to post a picture of the name sake.

How do you guys get the probe wire through the drum and keep it from melting at the entry point?

That's what I did but she is still pretty warm at the moment. I'll let her settle and check it out.

How hot you getting Doc? I was running mine over the lid but that will stop, i see a crimping problem arising...Going with the hole's next smoke!

Son of UDS
Well, the second UDS. I wanted to ask you Brothers who have made one and have an extended intake, is the height an issue with air intake?
Did not think the thing would go that high above the pit when I bought it! http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n...a/IMG_1631.jpg |

Doc, here's what I did to keep the cables from crimping. Also, I no longer buy the rubber coated lines and only go with the metal braided. The rubber will not hold up if crimped in any way. Hope this helps.

Bentley I definetly think it does, I switched 2 of my intakes to higher and it does not draw air in as well as the bottom intakes..., now I can leave one bottom on open and play with the daisy wheel and dial in temps, and with the ball valve on the high intakes I can control temps more acurate... one bottom intake works better than two high intakes open... |
Here is a link to a post I had about the same issue...

RE: Bentley son of UDS
I'd love to try a 24" high 3" diameter exhaust stack on that UDS. The longer stack creates more draw but at the end of the day you will probably end up dropping that valve to a more common height. Usually the reason we have the high mounted valves is to keep from bending over to make adjustments-I'm sure we could adjust that valve with our foot!!! |

What is the advantage of a vertical intake pipe (outside of not having to bend over to adjust your ball valve)?
|
None that I can see.

Simple in this case is the best. |
Besides the Coolness Factor, I find my Vertical 1" Intake Pipe allows me easy access to fine tune the Temps for Low and Slow. I'm 6'6" and having the Intake at my fingertips is a big advantage, IMHO.
http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/at...6&d=1195332985 I've read where others have had problems with Temp Control, having gone Vertical with their Intakes, but I've had no such issues. Consistant Temps, Consistant Results. Perhaps the Ram on top makes a difference! |
N8Man... thanks for changing your avitar... I am no longer having bad dreams....
Highjack mod off.... |
