After reading 57 pages  I decided to see what all the comotion was about the UDS. So I built one. It took about 12 beers to put together thanks to all this info on this thread. You guys are the greatest! I'd like to give a special thanks to BBQ Bubba & Cliff H. for answering all the questions I had. Thanks guys
Hopefully I'll get her seasoned up and cookin' this weekend. A few pics of the build. First off because of this..........:icon_blush: http://aycu32.webshots.com/image/442...6089161_rs.jpg ....I added the handle for easy removal of the charcoal basket. http://aycu29.webshots.com/image/468...4258436_rs.jpg http://aycu12.webshots.com/image/445...9594260_rs.jpg A little chrome and she's ready to go  http://aycu05.webshots.com/image/463...3297161_rs.jpg |

Lid problem solved....
Been having a hard time finding the time to work on my UDS.Been fighting health problems with my wife. Anyway I've been on the hunt for a weber lid for my UDS and have struck out. A friend at work suggested searching freecycle.com so, I signed up Tuesday with a local chapter, posted what I was looking for. Today I get home and got two e-mails from people wanting to GIVE me their Weber kettles!! I suggest that anyone looking for or wanting to give away something sign up on their local freecycle group. I was looking for weeks for a lid and in two days I got two of them. Build Pics and first smoke pics will follow.

Well I somewhat finished the 2nd and last UDS! My sister made fun of my paint job, but that is par for the course! Off to put it up for sale on Craigs List! Hey maybe I should donate it to a company and see if they would be my sponser! Yeah..lot of tie in w/Duracell and BBQ! |
Great looking thing you got there. Congrats. I've heard that cooking for them once or twice might be enough.
|
hey chinesebob///
where'd you get that valve on the smoke stack?? (on your website) looks like a spicewine one. |
Hey Bently i noticed you were hiding it from the neighbors behind the sheet. Is it out of embarassment or worried they will jack it?
http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n...s/IMG_1676.jpg |
Norco it's slightly hidded because there may be a neighbouring blond housewife thinking he's making some sort of jumbo bomb.
For my next build I'm thinking a single 1.1/2 '' ball on the bottom and a 2'' opening on the top. Am I doing too much? |

I am more worried you are going to find the listing on Craigs List and share it here and then I will be really embarased! If he does Brothers, remember ..."Sell the sizzle, not the Steak..." LOL |

Just curious if anyone has sold any UDS's on craigslist? I've gotten a few inquiries but no firm obligations. I am donating one as a door prize at a BBQ class and doing a cooking demo on it. They were showstoppers at the comps I cooked at and everyone had to stop and talk to me about them. I'd probably starve if I were a salesman!

Yeah, it sold in 12 hours to a fellow CBBQA member! I had 3 responses from Craig's List but it was already sold so I pulled it! |
The nibbles I got were from the PNWBA members.

Wow, this thread is great. I think I may have found a 55 gallon drum, the only problem is it previously contained methanol. Would this drum be safe to use after a few good burns or should I avoid it all together and continue to search for something food grade. Thanks.
|

If it was pure methanol (ie...no additives), I would assume it would burn completely and leave no residue at all. However, I'll leave the official/final word on that to the experts. I Emailed my Pop for his input (Chem Eng), so hopefully he answers in a fairly timely manner. |
Personally I would look around for a bakery or cookie factory and try to get one that had food stuff in it. They are around.
|
Isn't the result of Methanol combustion, Carbon Dioxide and Water (steam)? I think the determining factor would be if all the Methanol would be burned away or otherwise evaporate...
Not quite as exciting excercise as the plane on the conveyor belt, but what the *heck*... |
Thanks for the replies, it seems all the bakeries in my area (south eastern VA) have never heard of a 55 gallon steel drum. I will keep my eyes on the lookout. With all these great looking UDS smokers on here I want to make mine asap and get er cooking.
|
I don't know if the methanol would be as toxic as the food grade painted liner I burnt out. I think food grade only refers to the lining in solid form- not under heat. And yes I did hAVE two bigass fires to try to remove this stuff and got down to bare metal.

Stainsless Steel...
Stainless Steel plumbing hardware...nipples, elbows, caps, nuts and what not...for you UDS building pleasure.

Well, after a week of sea trials...the Amp Energy, National Guard #88 N8man Drumpit clone is ready for final completion. Held real constant (and adjustable) temps...more~so with briqs than with lump. No surprise there, same happens with my other drum.
Only real diff from the drumpit is the exhaust is 1 1/2" Dia. instead of 2" and is a few inches shorter with corresponding shorter intake (I ain't six foot six...:-P). Also used, 3/4" nips instead of 1". Now just gotta disassemble, burn out again, metal prep, #88 paint job, reasemble, buy a Weber lid handle (Westlakes was out of 'em) and send it on a one~way ticket to Talladega, Alabama. Gonna try the sheet magnets too instead of a ball valve or fabricating a vent cover. Though I may send down an intake ball valve as an added sales feature... N8man's got him a real good design there...(hoists beverage in air...(coffee))!!! I'll probably build another on for myself. But...some lucky unwashed, drunken race fan down at 'Dega sure is gonna like this one!!!:mrgreen::mrgreen: http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/at...5&d=1205512268 http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/at...6&d=1205512268 |

Yeah what N8man said pick out the ideas you like and go for it. but the rule of pron is the only rule:icon_bigsmil

Oh yes!! Just returned from the MIL's dropping off a drum for her and picking up the last one she burned out for me. I'll start cleaning it up and building next weekend.

Would you guys burn it once if it had soy bean oil in it? I would think that would be perfect for the first smoke and its alreay black so i could paint it as needed.
|
if it had paint on the inside you will need to burn it off
|

What ever it takes to get to bare metal inside. Most food grade barrels have a liner of epoxy or vinyl etc. This must be burnt off to bare metal. Taake care to avoid the toxic smoke. |
It appears to be bare. Its shiny and clean... except for some remaining oil. Do you think i should burn it once just to be safe?

Mine had olive oil in it...I just wiped it out and fired up a full basket of cheap Rancher briqs so I could play with the vents just to get an idea of how she burned before puttin' some grub on. :-P |

Had a section of stainless put together last week to use on sunny days and went back today realizing we dont get many so had a spare done for when it's raining.
It measures two inches so it fits directly into the bung on the lid.. http://i27.tinypic.com/2zf5rix.jpg http://i27.tinypic.com/s58s2p.jpg http://i25.tinypic.com/v8233b.jpg http://i28.tinypic.com/sfcetl.jpg |
Looking like your on you way. Gotta ask, Using those MM things or those superior inches?
|
LOLOLOL Man I couldn't tell ya I just went to see my buddy and said I would need his help with some welding after I pillaged his shop.
Actually it reads both = 2" X 50mm ( see they are coming around to the right side over here.) :D I left the shop thinking I should have say an 1" x 14" made for the intake with the elbow and a ball valve but I really don't want it hanging out too far from the drum. Stainless is cool!! |

Looks like you'r gonna win battle of the drums (for speed of construction and commissioning for use anyway) |
I don't know man I plan on falling off a barstool sometime before 3PM today ( :icon_clownbirthday mod :icon_clown) so it may not be a great day for smoking. There is one other wall to climb, unless I pirate the temp gauge from the other drum I'm still at least a week away so you still have a chance at wining the tea party. lol
|
Ready to drill for the grate, I'll only have one for now because of the lack of Weber dome lids so how far from the top would you guys recomend? I was thinking about eight inches should work and give room for a bird and a rib rack.
|
As long as it's 609.6mm (24 inches:wink:) from the upper surface of the fire grate it will be OK.

Newbie Building a UDS
Not sure what I'm doing, but after reading the entire thread, I had to give it a shot. Got a reconditioned drum and some miscellaneous parts and started building. Did an initial burn with charcoal after torching the inside with a propane torch. Today's goal was go as hot as possible to help burn off anything that shouldn't be in there. Tomorrow I'll go for long-term temperature control. Soon I'll throw some real meat on this thing and see how it goes!
