I've always used a cheap coffee grinder to grind up spices like whole peppercorns etc. Usually with less then stellar results. Seems like I get a mix of everything from dust to "halved" peppercorns. Same with other spices.

I was wondering if anyone uses a burr grinder strictly for spices? I've seen a few on ebay that seem reasonable, but thought i'd get some advice here, first.

I use a burr grinder for spices, I got it cheap at Target. It works better than the whirring blades of random pulverization. I prefer a medium grained rub, and the burr grinder lets me set the grain size to what I prefer.

I bought a Melitta brand burr grinder at Tarszhay Boutique (Target) for around 20 beans and it makes a much more uniform grind than a whirly bird grinder.

A mortar and pestle has it's place for me too. If your mashing up dry spices with wet aromatics like Garlic or onion. Huevos Rancheros would not be the same without it. :-D

I have a mortar and pestle as well, I use it a lot on herbs, both fresh and dry.
