found a nice clean drum for my second uds build and it was only $8. some kind of stuffing for medical braces etc. came in it. kinda like little Styrofoam pellets. but i measured it this morning and it is about 1 inch smaller than a 55 gal drum!!!!! my weber lid is about an inch to big. i have not tried it yet but i am betting that the 22.5 grate will not go in it either! what is this??? metric maybe??

i just went out and checked the grate. it sits nicely on top of the drum!! guess i could cut it off and make a grill out of it!!:tsk:

Sit the drum on top of your turkey fryer, you'll have one hell of a sweet corn steamer:-P

Ok then, why didn't we measure before buying? Not all drums are created equal.

Get Turkey to make you a custom grate!

That would be a first choice but if that isn't possible you could easily make a grill out of expanded metal. If it's narrower I would think it would be taller which would be good.

Sell it for $20 and get the right one?

Or you can get the grate for the Pro Q excell 20 and use that since it is 2 inches smaller than a 22.5

So, maybe you can learn from this idiot's mistake... Picked up a replacement grate at Academy, intending it to be one of the cook racks on my UDS build. Turns out it was smaller than the other grate I'm putting in there. "What in the...", I say, before heading back to Academy to return it. Come to find out, it was the replacement CHARCOAL grate, not COOKING grate, for a 22.5 kettle. And may in fact be just about the right size for your barrel...

That sounds like it's just the right size for the grate and lid from the wally world "22.5" grill. I measured before I bought and it's too small for my drum

no worries. all you have to do is take the weber lower 1/2 and cut it about 5" down...just below the grate supports. then you take that ring and set it on top of the drum and fasten it w/ sheet metal screws and fire place sealing rope. That way the lid fits perfect in the weber "ring" and the grate fits on the little tab supports as they were both designed to do. Then just finish the drum as normal.
