Anybody catch the food network bbq shows yesterday? They had everything from pork butt, pork ribs, beef ribs, brisket, sausage. Saw some sweet smokers I now dream about.

I saw the Bobby Flay Boy Meets Grill marathon, since the farking rain kept me inside.

Then the Unwrapped was cool too.

Did you catch the slaw recipe on Bobby Flay? think I'll make some of that and put on my butt sammy's next time. He only cooked his pork butt for 3 hours on a gas grill though, looked a little pink.

One of us needs a show.

Here it is Bryan

Creamy Cole Slaw
1 head green cabbage, finely shredded
2 large carrots, finely shredded
3/4 cup best-quality mayonnaise
2 tablespoons sour cream
2 tablespoons grated Spanish onion
2 tablespoons sugar, or to taste
2 tablespoons white vinegar
1 tablespoon dry mustard
2 teaspoons celery salt
Salt and freshly ground pepper

Combine the shredded cabbage and carrots in a large bowl. Whisk together the mayonnaise, sour cream, onion, sugar, vinegar, mustard, celery salt, salt, and pepper in a medium bowl, and then add to the cabbage mixture. Mix well to combine and taste for seasoning; add more salt, pepper, or sugar if desired.

Bobby Flay uses gas.....what a wuss.

That Jack McDavid - he uses charcoal. There, there's you some grilling.

He had a few going diring the course of the day.

Was using a WSM in the early shows (last year) and a couple Kettles in the later shows.

Used nothing but lump charcoal, when not using gas.

Did y'all see the Top 5 BBQ Surprises on Food TV last night?

#5 BBQ Mutton (from Moonlite in my hometown of Owensboro Ky)
#4 BBQ Pie (?) from Houston Livestock Show
#3 BBQ spaghetti
#2 BBQ seafood
#1 German Meat Markets (in specific, those around in Central TX)

My folks were in visiting this past weekend. They saw the Top 5 thing on mutton,
showing the owner of the Moonlite (they recognized him), and then when it was
over had to argue about where it was they saw the Food Network folks filming
back home.

DFlittle, of course, would want to bury #5 in his back yard.

I saw the Bobby Flay slaw yesterday and improvised a recipe of my own with what I just had on hand in my kitchen.

1/2 head cabbage finely shredded
1 bell pepper, chopped
1/2 cucumber peeled and chopped
3 Tbsp Mayo
2 Tbsp Sour Cream
2 Tbsp Dijon Mustard
1 Tbsp White wine vinegar
1 Tbsp Sugar
Salt and Pepper to taste.

Combine veggies in a big bowl. Mix all of the other ingredients in a smaller bowl until smooth and creamy. Add the dressing to the veggies in small amounts until the veggies are all coated. Eat.

How can one tiny little city be the only place in the USA that uses mutton for anything?(Note to David this is a lamb that somehow survived being a tasty leg of or didn't get buried in the backyard). And Racer, I hope you didn't know my ex Ethel Tabor

Other places in that general area, and around the US I suppose, use mutton.

But in Owensboro and the surrounding county, it's tradition and competition.

You see, all the Catholic parishes there (20 or so) have BBQ picnics in the summer
and each tries to outdo all the rest. Take that, some other church groups, some civic
minded groups, throw in some pride, and you have a booming competition.

Traditionally, the meat has been mutton, starting back around a hundred years or
so ago when sheep were a big bidness. Nowadays they gotta import the sheep meat
from other states.

Ethel......Fred, is that you?

anyone see the nifty little low-dollar electric job that alton brown came up with? would be perfect for smoking stuff where you couldnt take your big jobs. was basically, a hot plate, a pan for the smoking chunks, a round grill, a bigass terra-cotta planter, and a terracotta lid. he just dropped the thermometer in the hole at the top. looked pretty trick for a low-buck setup.
