I found this post on Craigslist (http://baltimore.craigslist.org/zip/1694114016.html), from a guy who has oak and apple wood logs free for the taking. My question is, is cut wood that may have been sitting outside in the elements safe to smoke with? I wouldn't use any rotting wood, but if the logs look clean, is there any reason to be concerned?

I wouldnt have a problem with it, as long as its what it says it is.

I'd jump on that stuff! You should be able to tell if it's good just by lookin at and feeling if its soft.

go get that Wood Dude, if some of it soft maybe the whole pile isn't, and will be good wood...I once was given a 15 Foot piece of Sassafras that was soft on one and solid on the other side...All I did was cut off the soft part and used the rest...Be creative

If it sits too long out in the elements, it can get termites. And piling that up against your house can be expensive. Also, it it's growing mushrooms, it's too far gone for fuel.

Get it burn some in your chimney and you'll know if its good. I get lots of oak and fruit wood like that and what's nice is that its already seasoned....
