Jeebs,

It's not really a competition, so much as a bbq event dont in Dayton (near downtown).
http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/showthread.php?t=78512

The good parts are that there's no entry fee, and you get to serve the food to a neighborhood that needs a lot of love and grace.

HM, intending, or going to be there? :)

I am sorry that I could not attend the last 2 years due to prior commitments.
I know that some of the best bbq cooks on the planet attend this event.
For that I thank you all.
I was helping over 100 folks obtain their hunter saftey certificates.
Some of them have never handled a live firearm and I want them to handle them in a very safe way.
We do live fire with rifles and shotguns.
A lot of clubs use just pellet guns, that doesn't really help them out in the field.
That gives me a warm fuzzy feeling when we hunters are out in the field hoping they paid very close attention in our classes.
This year no problem with conflicting dates.....I am pumped to come and help the group out.

I forgot about fatties, Roger, thanks for the reminder... Bring fatties fixins for the fatty comp, too!

For judging, I'm taking several of the guys from the men's ministry to a local bbq joint to show them how to judge brisket and pork.

I'm getting excited... now start praying for great weather!

Here's what to expect:

To bring:
Anything you want for your 'site'. EZ ups, tables, etc.
Rubs and sauce for a lot of pork and brisket. Figure on cooking anywhere from 50-75 pounds of meat.
Whatever ingredients you need for MOINK balls and ABTs and *** and fatties ***
Anything else you want to share food-wise with others
If you'd like to do a demo of something to the men that will be helping, whatever is needed for that
sleep stuff if you're going to sleep
Garnish for a brisket box and pork box; we'll do one of each and average the scores. I will provide the turn in boxes.
Timeline is:
Show up sometime after noon on Saturday, May 15. Guys should be available to set up.
Serve around noonish on Sunday
Other than that, we'll be fixing stuff for dinner on Saturday, too, but I've got that covered.

We had some other money donated, too, so I just ordered 6 racks of spares and 3 racks of beef ribs. We'll do demos early on Saturday afternoon with that.

We'll have about 60% of the meat we had last year, so we should have room, with lots of little smokers, and a couple of big Lang's. We'll should also have room for the ribs and what I'm cooking for dinner for you guys.

I was thinking.. if you make a great side dish and want to share that, bring it along for Saturday dinner. We'll have about 15-20 people around. I'm going to make tomato pie for everyone, too.

One more thing that was brought to my attention that I forgot to mention...

The Dayton Vineyard is not against drinking, but the campus where we'll be does a lot of recovery work, and we don't drink on church property. To support that, I do ask that no beer/wine/alcohol be brought.

I've been trying to clean out my freezer, I'll look to see if there is any other meats I can bring.

Along those lines, I'm planning on bringing down a case of sauce. Is there anything else you need?

After what we were able to pull off last year, I no longer fear a lack of space for cooking this event... I just remember the story of the fish's and loaves...

I was thinking.. if you make a great side dish and want to share that, bring it along for Saturday dinner. We'll have about 15-20 people around. I'm going to make tomato pie for everyone, too.
Actually, I need to make up some Four Cheese Mac&Cheese for this weekend, I'll try and make up an extra 1/2 pan for down there.

I know that it's early but, according to AccuWeather, Saturday is supposed to be in the 60's with a chance of rain and Sunday should be in the 60's and dry...

We'll just have to keep an eye on it since it's still pretty far out for any real accuracy...

My only real concern is Friday's thunderstorms and how wet the area's going to be..

cmcadams
05-06-2010, 09:39 AM
Yeah, it does look like rain for now. That area, if I remember, actually drains decently, but you may all want to consider canopies to cover the smokers.

CBob, are you bringing your big smoker?

For any sleep, we can go inside and keep dry, just needing to get out for cooking purposes. We can eat in there on Saturday evening.

All, don't forget to have lunch on your way in, though don't overdo it, as we'll have food all evening and night, from abts to MOINK balls to Roger's "kill me now" venison chili...

The Pigman
05-06-2010, 11:16 AM
Also I am bringing a propane burner and large pot to heat water on site or to heat up whatever anybody brings. And we will have use of my truck with the Stainless steel counter tops. I do have all the lights and outlets working if There is a generator I can use so we can be out of the weather if it gets bad prepping and taking off the meat. The sink is not hooked up yet but we have the rest of the truck to use. I will be bringing a coffee pot and coffee for sat night and sun moring. I also have packages of porksausage I made that I am bringing to make porksausage patties Sunday morning to go with eggs. Maybe some of the guys from the Vineyard would not mind making it in the kitchen and bringing it over to the area. I have 6 lb packages and bring 2 of them. As I said before I will be bringing 2 coolers full of pop for all to have. I will be bringing my small canopy and my large one. So if you can hook us up with a generator Curt we should be ok. I need to be able to plug into 2 outlets 110.

We won't be able to cook in the kitchen most likely, since services will be held that day, so don't plan on that, though they may change their minds.

Curt the drinks you have are for giving out I got these for us sat day and night. I will bring another propane burner and we can use 2 castiron skillets to fry up the sausage and eggs. Unless someone has one of the camp chef type griddles that go over the twoburnner set ups.

The Pigman

Also we will have the truck to stay dry in for the STICKBURNERS all night. Not much room but can stay dry and we can also strech a tarp over top and out to have more dry space maybe. Just a thought. If there is something I have that I can bring to lighten your loads guys let me know. Any one heard from our brother in PA.

Curt the drinks you have are for giving out I got these for us sat day and night. I will bring another propane burner and we can use 2 castiron skillets to fry up the sausage and eggs. Unless someone has one of the camp chef type griddles that go over the twoburnner set ups.
I have one that I'll bring along with the camp stove so we have enough burnners... Been thinking that I'll bring the cabinet and just keep it in the trailer. I'll also be bringing my Ez-Up in case we need it.

While the trailer is not tall or large, it is big enough for a couple of people to trim meat...

My plan is to crash in the trailer as long as we have power for my heater (if needed) and my other electronic devices (read C-PAP). If for some reason we don't get the generator, I'll be sleeping in the church basement.

Thank you Roger. I would only need one line to the trailer since it is now fully wired.

The only reason that I'm thinking of bringing the cabinet is because it already has every thing in it. Actually it's because I'm lazy. I have a comp in the Dells the following weekend and to try and take out the stuff I would need for Dayton and then make sure it got back into the unit for the Dells would be a pain.

You don't know how much I'm looking forward to seeing you all!:thumb:

Will be bringing a 3500 generator with me and a camp stove with a griddle already packed for Dayton.

The trailer is packed full of all types of goodies and cooking accessories!
(to be read as a fully stocked comp trailer... ez-ups, chairs, heaters, generator, coffe pot, smoker, rubs, etc..)

And will double for sleeping arrangements if needed.

Someone from Wisconsin (who will be nameless) asked for a special delivery from PA.

I was looking in the freezer and found I have a bunch (about 5-7 pounds) of Wisconsin Hot dogs (natural casings of course). I know in years past, we tried to be prepared for walk-ups during the night. I wouldn't mind donating them to the cause if you can arrange for the buns and condiments. Heck, I'll even bring down my little Gasser for cooking them.

What say you Curt?

A couple of things, after meeting with a couple of the pastors yesterday...

On Saturday, the kitchen will be unavailable to use from 3-6, due to a wedding taking place in the church. We'll have a couple big tubs of hot water available if needed, but we should be fine then.

What time do you all expect to start cooking pork and brisket? I just want to make sure that we have it over when needed, and kept cold if needed for any amount of time.

Just to reiterate, no moonshine at the event, please. :)

We won't have access to water outside. What we will have is men there to run stuff inside to wash as needed, other than from 3-6 on Saturday. For that, we'll have water in a couple of big bins available to use.

If you're getting in the fattie competition on Sunday morning, bring sausage or make arrangements for it. I will be making a bacon implosion again.

And if you're looking for Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale, it's now available around Dayton, where Bob used to have to go to KY to get it (me too).

The big coolers should work, without the cambros.

This is about the time I start realizing how big of a deal this coming weekend is.

I want to thank everyone ahead of time for coming out to Dayton, either in person, in spirit, by donation, whatever. We'll be in one of the most needy neighborhoods in the city, which is saying a lot. We'll be providing a meal that's not just something to eat, but barbecue made by people that love to barbecue, and served by cooks and volunteers with smiles on their faces.

It's also a weekend to see people I get to see only once a year. I remember when I hadn't met any of you in person, though I still considered you all friends, but something happens when you spend a weekend of serving with others. This is different than a competition, though I remember a few years ago staying up all night talking to Mike in Grand Rapids, then getting our first walk the next afternoon. But this has a goal that we're doing something together, not just seeing how our food stacks up to others. Leviticus is a bit of a stretch, as this food isn't meant as a true burnt offering, but it's still very pleasing to God.

I'm again humbled that what started with a quick post over 2 years ago is in its third year running, bigger and better than ever, and that some of you are coming back and some of you are joining for the first time.

I hear men all year talk about how tough it is to find someplace to serve or how easy it is to live life thinking just about yourself, even as Christians. I have used the group of cooks at the Pretty Good BBQ many times to show that it's not that tough to serve, and with the right heart, and that Christians in general could learn an awful lot about attitude and heart from the barbecue community.

I'm looking forward to seeing you all this weekend. I'll be cooking dinner tomorrow for you all, as well as making a bacon implosion for Sunday morning!

Watch out, Dayton!!! LOL.

Looking forward to meeting everyone tomorrow. I'll be there as soon as I can - not sure, but I may have a hospital visit in the morning.

Lord, please grant safe travels to all who are attending this event! Amen.

Wish you could have been there too bro!

Couldn't have asked for a better group doing what we do best. Mixing a passion for cooking and a passion for helping others. You guys made me proud!

Looking forward to next year already!
