Found this on CL two days ago and was finally able to go see it this AM. Original NB Horizontal in great condition. $125

Needs a little work and some rust cleaning on the underside and paint, but is solid.

No Mods that I can see, does anyone have a suggestion or two?

Looks like a good find to me.

You might want to extend the exhaust pipe down into the pit to just above the grate level and add a diffuser between the firebox and the smoke chamber. A charcoal basket, which allows more air under the charcoal is also a good mod.

I looked at the stack and it goes pretty far down, havn't measured but I would guess about 2 inches off the grate.

Basket is another thing I thought of too. Pain in the a$$ to make.

The diffuser sounds interesting. I did a similar mod on my bandera but didn't think it would be necessary cause of the placement of the stack being so far away from the firebox.

Still would like some more suggestions from anyone that has a similar pit.

Flip the grate over in the fsb to allow air under the fire... You have to burn big hunks of wood over the charcoal to make heat!!

Jim,
Here is a recent thread that covered the mods you can consider, along with some great pics to boot.

Once you find the mods that work for you (mine were jsut a baffle between firebox and cooker, then you will find those are good units for the price.

Fired it up this PM, Smoke comes out all over! :boxing: Got a good two hour burn at 450 and am going to do a picnic tomorrow. :clap2:

Temps are about 25 less near the stack vs the fire box. Thought that was reasonable. After tomorrows cook I will think about the mods I need.

Sharon, (BHSLH) has just informed me that we will need to expand the Very New Pit Area. Double the size and add a sink. :clap2::clap2::clap2::clap2::clap2::clap2::clap2:

What a woman!

Picnic shoulder went on at 07:15. It's 09:20 now and everything seems to be going well. Fire control is working and there is smoke everywhere. So What I guess.:laugh::laugh: I'll post prons later.

You'll find the temp variance is bigger when you have some cold meat in there, but that is a really nice variance to start with and should be easy to overcome if you ever choose to do so. Good luck, I loved my offset. Still have it, but I think i am going to Frankenstein the sucker with a Bandera I have.
