Hello all,

I usually make my own rubs and they have served me well. But for the sake of just trying out different tastes and flavors, can you all recommend your favorite commercially available rubs to mainly use on ribs?

I love a sweet rib and I may do Trigg's honey/sugar/parkay as well, but I wanted to know the brethern's favorite commercial rubs for ribs. Thanks.

I like Plowboys Yardbird myself. Get the sweet from the sauce.

I've bought Grill Mates Pork rub and apple wood rub and they both tasted great. I also liked the Famous Dave's rib rub. I found them at Ralphs. I want to try all the ones that have been suggested too.

Simply Marvelous Sweet and Spicy, Pecan or Cherry are all excellent rubs for pork. I have not tried the Apple yet, it comes highly recommended.

I also use Dizzy Pigs Dizzy Dust salt-free when I am wanting to reduce sodium. Good stuff as well.

I'll second Simply Marvelous Sweet and Spicy and Cherry. I didn't know he had a Apple rub, looks like I need to place another order:becky:

I am a big fan of Dizzy Pig Rubs..they are all so fresh tasting and the different spices really come through - I tend to use Dizzy Dust on my ribs..a couple others also but they escape me right now for some reason?? Long day I guess

Really like the 3Eyz rub. It is somewhat sweet and very uniform, and does not cake.
I need to try a few others as Landarc has sparked my interest. I also make my own, but man it is sure a lot easier (not cheaper) to just stand on the shoulders of our Brethren.

Simply Marvelous Cherry has been the rub of chioce around here lately for all things pork.

I would say go to Big Brother Smoke's and Great Lakes BBQ Supply and let your fingers do the walking. We have some great talent here on this site and they put out really good products.

Simoly Marvelous

Plowboys Yardbird or Bad Byron's butt rub are my favorites on ribs. Like I heard before on page 1, get the sweet from the sauce. And if you like heat, sprinkle some Habanero Death Dust from Oakridge BBQ as an extra.

Last year I bought several commercial rubs, and didn't use it all. I used one on a pork butt this weekend, and it just didn't have the flavor I remembered. So I'm wondering what an expected shelf life should be for rubs? I guess I should have put some of it in the freezer?

From what I understand if you keep your rubs out of the light, and tightly sealed up, they will last a bit longer before losing their zip. Not sure if freezing is the way to go for that.

Maybe some of the rub experts here will have some better advice.

I second this. I'm gonna start asking for BBQ Brethren based rubs as gifts from my family when they ask me what I want, so I'd like to know the best way to store this stuff. I'm talking about possible storage for a year, if that's feasible. If not, I'd just get less I reckon.

Tony Chacheres creole seasoning for my brisket after the yellow mustard. Fiesta Fajita seasoning on my baby back ribs. Never had anything but compliments.

Vac sucking and freezing works well. I would not go more than a year though.

That's pretty much what I did, the rubs were in the original plastic jars and stored in a kitchen shelf. Maybe the rubs need to be transferred to a glass jar with a tighter sealing lid....

Thanks

I usually mix my own , but the cost is pretty high to do so. I just recently ordered a bottle each of the plowboys yardbird and the bovine. I tend to like spicy rubs , to find something premixed and easily available would be great.

I got care packages from some of the brethren recently. In one of them, there were little sample sizes of all things Simply Marvelous. I'd go to their website, and pick out a bunch to try. Great way to taste test without a huge commitment. I am STUCK on their Cherry.

I keep all my rubs stored in mason jars and keep them in the pantry. I have small shaker bottles that I transfer some of the rubs to, as needed. I just keep the bottles marked so I don't acciedently mix rubs together.

I ordered the Simply Marvelous sampler pack a while ago and absolutely love it. My favs are SM Pecan and Spicy Apple... and the Sweet & Spicy... and the Peppered Cow... heck they are all good. What I like most about them is that they are low in salt and not too sweet (for my taste at least).

I visited the Kansas City BBQ Supply Store in KC recently and tasted a bunch of different rubs (many of which have been mentioned above) but found most of them to be too salty. I bought some Smokin' Guns Hot that I think I will like as well as some Oak Ridge rubs. I tried the SM Sweet Seduction and Habanero Death Dust on some wings the other day and they were fantastic. If you like spicy, then the HDD is a real winner.

If there are any other low salt rubs that folks like, I would love to hear about them.

I love Outlaw Rub from Brethren Steve at BBQ Equipment Store(5-0 BBQ). The outlaw rub is my goto all around rub. Recently tried the sample rubs from Dixie Meat Rub very good as well. The Beef rub on brisket was on the money.

i love the simply marverlous rubs. the cherry, spicy apple, sweet seduction, pecan, peppered cow and season all are my favorites. low on salt and the flavors are great. my son puts the pecan rub on his eggs and potatoes. i thought i saw him put some on his corn flakes.
