I have my two seven pound butts ready, but i am looking to make a good rub for them before i put them on tonight. Does any one have any good rub recipes, I normally just do salt and pepper and a few other spices but i am really looking for amazing rub to add some flavor.

Here is Chris Lilly's recipe. You don't have to use the injection. The rub is very good.

Chris Lilly's Six-time World Championship Pork Shoulder

Recipe By : Chris Lilly of Big Bob Gibson's
Serving Size : 0 Preparation Time :0:00
Categories :

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
-------- ------------ --------------------------------
For the pork shoulder rub
1/4 cup dark brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup paprika
1/3 cup garlic salt
1/3 cup kosher salt
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 teaspoon oregano leaves
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon black pepper
-----------
Pork injection
3/4 cup apple juice
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup salt
2 tablespoons Worcestershire
------------
1 whole pork shoulder (approximately 16 pounds)
1 bottle Big Bob Gibson Championship Red Sauce (or substitute your favorite BBQ sauce)

Inject pork shoulder evenly with injection solution. Apply a generous amount of rub onto meat. Pat so the rub will adhere. Place in a smoker and cook with indirect heat for 16 hours on 225°F. Serve with sauce on the side or paint shoulder with sauce the last 20 minutes of cooking. When done, the pork should pull off the bones easily. The internal temperature of the pork should reach 195°F.

Don't turn your nose up to some of the store bought stuff. I was at the grocery the other day and was pleasantly surprised with what I found.

store bought rub is high in salt..

It sure can be (some more so than others). Then again, I've found that 14lbs of meat can take a fair amount of salt.

FWIW, that Big Bob Gibson recipe is a good one.

I used to use Pappy's for a long time. I also like Plowboy's Yardbird. There are a couple of local ones that I like, I doubt they are in NY though. I did not like Bone Suckin' rub, alhtough I like their sauces.

I use the rub recipe (no injection) in the 2nd post and it works great everytime. It makes enough for about 2.5 pork butts.

I use Big Rons rub which is very low in sodium.

Last time I actually used one of Steven Raichlen's rubs - found it at either Dick's Sporting Goods or Academy Sports - it was pretty decent.

I figure next time I am at Bass Pro - I'll get some of Plowboys stuff.. until then I'll stick with my own

I agree. McCormicks aint bad at all.

Famous Dave makes a nice rub. Corky's, Stubb's, all are tasty.

I guess I'm fortunate to have a couple stores in town that carry several different rubs.
