UDS II Build--Carppy Pron pics, but still Pron.

The OCD in my has sent me on a quest for the PERFECT fit Weber lid on a UDS. I had three drums and assorted drum lids, none of which orginally belonged to the three drums. I had a deep drum lid that was from a banded drum. I cut it to fit my drum and then welded it back together.

Cut the center out and then got to working on making the ring fit my drum.

As you can see, too big for my drum by about an inch.

Took in the slack and made it tight around the edge of the drum. Perfect. I tacked the inside and outside edge.

Flattened out the edge of the lid. And positioned over the ring.

Strapped down lid and then pounded flat lid edge over the edge of the ring so that they were one!

Then welded lid to ring. My welds look like chit as it is, but they are even worse here because I had to move fast so as not to burn through the thin lid and the ring. I perform plastic surgery on my welds with the grinder tomorrow and finish welding the rest of the lid.

Charcoal basket. You have no idea how hard it is to fing these metal milk crates. I got this one at a recycling place and some little grates that I will use to line in from the inside to make the holes and gaps smaller so that the coal doesn't fall through. It needs some rebar legs for ash clearance and will get a nice rebar handle for easy lifting and lowering.

So far I have about 20 dollars invested in this drum. 10 for the drum and 3 for the basket and extra grates and 7 for the new meat grate. I already had the lid.
I just might finish it tomorrow.

Bob, I'm going to steal your idea! Did you have any problems with the porcelin coating on the weber lid cracking when you straightened it out? I had to readjust my lid when I made my first drum and the coating kept cracking. I would have kept going, but figured I was going to mess it up even more than I had. Thanks for posting the pron!

Wear eye protection and gloves. Freaking porcelain is deadly. I'm experimenting with mine so that I can refine my dad's and friend's drum, so I basically hammered the porcelain away. The welding takes its toll on the porcelain too. But some high temp paint will kinda fix that.
I knew i was gonna fark up the porcelain to begin with so it was okay for me. Even with a rubber mallet, the porcelain cracks. I like the ugly look!:lol:

Ugly welds for an UGLY Drum. A coat of high temp paint. It's all primer paint at the moment. I'm thinking Fire Engine Red for this drum.

The lid is one snug fit. Only real smoke will reveal the leaks. Still need the patented check's in the mail JD tab vents, a shelf and a bottle opener and bottle cap catcher which will funtion as a wireless therm holder.
I just might be able to season it today, but probably not.

You guys think that basket has enough ash clearance. I'll be cutting the long red grates to size and bending back the ends. Did not have time to season. I'm going with red and black for this one. Tabs are made.
I'm going to play with an idea of a suspended diffuser/water pan. I'd like to do some experimenting with direct, diffused, and water in the drum. It should have about 2" clearance. Also gonna work on a system for ash removal. Hope it works.

2 inch clearance for ash is the recommended for a typical KISS UDS build but I started at 2in and then added another inch after my 2nd butt. It looks like you're good with the tools so I'd say build it, get it dirty, then adjust as needed. It looks like your top grate is way more than the 24in recommended clearance from the fire box bottom so if you need/want you have plenty of room to raise the firebox to allow for more ash drop/time between sweeping up...

I thought about doing this to Drum 1. I'm still debating this idea for this Drum. I can't wait to try it out either. I might try to apply some paint tonight.
