Which is better for the smoker?

I have done the butt portion with great success. A little apple juice to keep it moist is all I used and a glaze at the end. Good Luck.

I am fond of the butt portion and have only done two shanks in my life... Rather the but part with the blade bone...JMY2cents

Either work great. Are you resmoking an already cooked ham?

Either work great.

I agree with Bubba. I don't think one cooks better than the other. It's basically the same as a butt vs picnic pork shoulder. One just has the blade and one has more bone (part of the leg bone). Both cook about the same I think. Theyre'll just be possibly a bit more "waste" with a shank just cuz of the amount of bone.

I always get them backwards unless I am looking at them... one of them is a little ham ish in texture, so I like the other which I think is the shank. And usually a little cheaper.
