You made it look easy!! I had a hell of a time making my lid/flange assembly work out right. Took me weeks of tinkering. Nice looking drum! Now get it dirty.:eusa_clap

Damn! Now I need a donor kettle. Isn't there a box on your driver's license that you can check?

Ok, to each their own, but I think my mod is easier. Although I can see why you guys don't want to take a hammer to a good lid and mess up the porcelin.

You can mash the outer most lip on the weber lid down a bit(maybe half way), drill 4 holes to install 4 bolts with nuts to hold, some furnace gasket and have a lid that sits firm and smoke free from the rim.

Hard to see but the edge has been mashed to halfway flat.
http://i829.photobucket.com/albums/zz211/PaulB12/DSCF5292.jpg
Here the furnace gasket fits nicely in the half mashed channel and around the bolts. The length of bolt I used makes for a very stable lid that sits square(or is it round) on the drum. I'm sure it would work for a weber lid, mine is a SS lid about the same size as a weber lid.

JMHO and experiences..............

1. How do you mash the edge.
2.What do you with the lid while your working on the grate. It seems with the extruding hardware that it would be difficult to set most places, much less hang on the side of the drum.

My solution... lid hangs on drum great...

...but the EVEN BETTER LID is the cheapo Uniflame, which hinges on this version I built when combined with two 1" shelf brackets...

It works so well, I am thinking of modifying the Weber version!

FWIW, YMMV and all other applicable acronyms.

I used a big ball peem hammer.
I either lay the lid on my small patio or hang it on one of my empty plant holders.

I modded my SS UDS today, since it was a little big for a Weber or Arctic (SS) lid. I added a strip of 1/8" X 1-1/4" SS to the inside of the bead, attached with button head screws. Lid fits good now! I don't have the wherewithal to weld SS- the screws work fine, although it was a chore with a hand drill. Idea here- drill the holes in the strip of metal while it is straight, using a drill press. Then bend it in to place, and drill from the inside out, using the holes in the strip to guide the drill.

Nice work smokemaster!

Was the donor kettle hard to come by in Germany? They are a dime a dozen around here-so I didn't have to "jump through hoops" to get any of mine!

This one had been sitting outside an office across from mine for the last 2 years. Finally got in touch with the folks and they were glad to get rid of it. Otherwise they are hard to find.Nice work smokemaster!
