I put 2 butts on at 9:30 last night, and the coals were shot at 9:30 this morning, and the vent holes were clogged with ash. I put them in a foil pan, and into the oven. In the past I have gone over 18 hours on a load of coals. Not much any of us can do about it. Just venting.:x:cry:

Are you sure it's the charcoal?

I had similar problems, much less hate the smell of the stuff. I switched to Stubb's from Lowes. No off smell and longer burn times.

I can't think of anything else it could be. Everything else was the same as I always do it. The charcoal is the only thing that would explain the ash build up.
I've always been a Kingsford fan, and will continue to use it, but this is disappointing.

I bought 600 pounds on sale over memorial day weekend. Have experienced no such change in quality.

Is it possible you didn't have the "K" up or the grooves not all going in the same direction?

I cant agree with you more, Brian. I recently had a chance to do a side by side with some Stubbs. It wasn't even a contest. The K caused fluctuations in temp I didn't have with the Stubbs, and the K had a lot more ash making it slower late in the cook. The Stubbs also burned longer and a bit hotter.

I bought some over Memorial day too, with no issues. This was a new bag I just bought at Lowes yesterday.

I agree with you 100%. I have had shorter burn times with the bags I loaded up on over Memorial day from Home Depot. I can not get through a spatchcocked chicken cook with the usual amount of coals I use to use.

I don't understand why kingsford changed from its original in the first place. Didn't those company execs learn anything from the "New Coke" fiasco in the mid eighties?

I'm cooking beef ribs, and there was no way that I could just add charcoal, and go on, There was ash right up to the bottom of the grate, and fully burnt coals that were nothing but ash still holding their form, because they had no where to go. This is the first time I have had to remove ash for a cook of this duration.

I noticed the same thing yesterday so I had to give the legs a couple of kicks1

Was it the standard or Comp? I've been using Wicked Good Lump for my smokes with some KF just to get things started. Almost no ash with that stuff. I do hate paying shipping but these 2 bags of WG have lasted a long long time!
