I know this is not new to you veterans but its cool to me. I bought a new remote thermometer and placed it at grate level so I can monitor the temp from inside. Got my warning set at 250 and its just cruisin now.

This is a meat thermo but i just put the probe in between two shoulders with the point facing up.

congrats...
As the meat cooks, it will likely shrink and may no longer hold the probe where you started..
You can stick the probe through a small rolled up ball of foil, a potato, a cork screw etc.. so you don't have to rely on the meat to hold it..

You can also drill a hole through a good size chunk of hickory or other smoke wood to hold the probe.

yall are right about the meat shrinking and it falling out. I will wait a couple hours and change that. I might fing me an onion to hold it..I like the smoked onion in my salsa.
