View Full Version : question for the EGG heads

I am having trouble with the dual purpose vent that came with my BGE. For example, last night I had the temp set perfectly at 225ish and it ran that way for hours - when I opened the lid today to check the meat, of course the vent slip open more fully. I tried to set it back to where I thought it was before (to maintain the 250) but when I came home the temp was running closer to 325-350. Do your vents do the same thing? Is there a way to keep them from sliding open so freely when the lid is open? Or, do I just deal with it?

I always try and remember to have the pivot screw toward the handle. Mine used to stay put real well until i cleaned it:biggrin:

Personally, when I get my temp to where I need it, I always lift off the vent and place it on the egg mate. Then when I finish doing what I need to do, I just place it back on.

most of your temp control is at the lower vent and the dfmt controls the smoke, if that makes sense. the lower vent setting should be at about 1/4"-3/16" when running at 250 dome temp and the top dfmt petals open only. 250 dome is about 230 at the grid level... once you have the ceramic mass stabilized at 250, you really shouldn't be spiking to over 300 unless you open both the lower vent and the slider on top.
