Here's the deal Brothers, Matthew's Eighth Birthday Party is this Saturday. Money is very tight around here so my MIL decided to help us out and is providing everything needed for his party.
Homemade Taco Salads is on the menu for 22 people and today she brought by the meat. She had it in her freezer at home.

Thing is the sell by date on the packages is well over two years old and the meat has a strange looking color to it. Wife is afraid to take a chance and serve it to all the guest. We like most of them that is coming to the party.

So Should we use the meat and see how it goes.

Should we just buy more and not tell her and chunk it,

so her feelings isn't hurt.

Ground chuck is on sale at W/D for $1.69 # right now.

Buy more, for 20 bucks it will be worth it...

Trash it, maybe mix beans in with the amount of meat you buy to bulk it up a little.

Always safe when feeding others.

Not much of a decision there. Not worth taking the chance.

"When in doubt, throw in out!" That was the first thing I learned at Cullinary Arts

We tend to agree but I knew asking here would firm up what we were already knowing. I have a pile of #2 copper I was saving for the price to go up. But I can get more than enough to pay for the meat if I go sell it tomorrow.

To be so difficult sometimes my MIL has the kindest heart, if you have ever made homemade taco salads you already know the money she is spending. She bought a whole case of the shells to make up. She wants every one to get there fill.

Can you cook some of it and try it?

It's thawing but one package already has an odor. Not a ruined smell but very different.

I had a 4 year old brisket somewhere in Kansas one time. It wasn't rotten, but was a funny color and funny smell.

It tasted like god awful chit. Even if the meat was safe to eat it's gonna taste like crap and your MIL will feel even worse.

Definitely toss. I've seen this kind of stuff cooked up for dogs, and it takes days for the stench to get out of the house. The dogs did survive, but I don't know how they were able to stomach it.

Even if you spend $20 for replacement meat, it is cheaper than the trip to the doctor or hospital... Not only that, if it smells that bad thawing, I'd hate to think what it is gonna taste like.

If it was just for the outlaws ................

Seriously, toss it. It ain't worth the risk of Matthew (or the others) getting sick. And it's not worth hearing someone say "Did you smell / taste that chit?".

It's gotta go... the thought of any one of the other kids getting sick just isn't a good thought. Hit up Winn Dixie and get the fresh meat.

Brother,
Please don't use it. If $$ is that tight (been there), PM me your address and I'll mail you $20 to cover the cost of some fresh ground beef.

I think you should just tell her (after the party is over) that you noticed the date on the package and decided you better be safe than sorry.

This is why this is the greatest forum on the web.
My copper was enough to cover, just hated selling it for what little it brought.

I've already told her that before but not for that reason. :twisted:If she thought it was still good it would still be in her freezer I imagine.

It will be tossed and fresh bought.
