Build a fire around the barrel wood isde catch fire , put lid on it smother fire out keep fire under and aroud the barrel until all the gases burn off the pipe at the top take gases out and back into fire and burn also help with the heat. Then let cool for 24 hours. Actually very easy to make.

So let me see if I understand this. You go get cut/pick up the wood. You light it on fire to burn it down. Let it set for 24 hours. So it goes something like this-
Get wood-1 hour
start fire- 1 hour
let sit -24 hours
put into buckets and carry to house- 1 hour
27 total hours invested
If you can buy a bag of this stuff at the store for $10
If you did this for a living you just made 37 cents an hour!!
making your own lump= priceless

Nice job man, I like it when guys do stuff on there own. Thats what makes us men!

Verry cool indeed. Is the wood inside the barrel elevated on a fire grate? Are there any holes in the barrell? How full do you fill the barrell with wood? Inquiring minds want to know>:biggrin:

Jestridge Thats a interesting vertical retort design. I made mine similar to Daniel O'connor's. He makes charcoal for bladesmithing but the concept is the same as charcoal made for cooking.

The naked whiz has another type of kiln for making charcoal.

I make about #200 a year, in the spring so it dont start a brush fire, for the last 3 years and need to build a new retort. I think I will try making a load with the retort verticaly before I build the new one. I like making charcoal because I enjoy making 100% natural homemade food with meat that I raise and/or hunt for, we raise poultry and hunt deer and elk. I have never found any rocks or garbage (plasic rope, insulation, plywood,etc) in the charcoal I make.

I fill the barrel half full sometime more sometimes less Put some holes in bottom I think there 6 drill them around 1/2 in. It kinda like BBQ no certain way. The first batch I done took it out of barrel before it cool down when I went back it was burn up.

Is that lump or charcoal, or are they considered the same? I though charcoal had different suff mixed in besides the charded wood? Yours would be a pure product, better than charcoal I would think.

Just some observations from a non-charcoal using pellethead!
