What do you all use for a thermometer for a weber kettle? I want to be able to moniter grill temp but I don't want to drill a hole in the weber so that I can install the types of thermometers I use on my other stuff. Thank you in advance for all of the wealth of knowledge that I always seem to get from the brethren.

I drilled a hole and installed a Tru-Temp BBQ-250. I think the hole was somewhere around 1/4" dia.

I know some guys stick'm through the vet holes in the lid. Only drawback to that is sometimes gets in the way of what you may want to do with the vent.
That would be the only way I can think of right off hand that would work without drilling a hole. I've drilled two holes in my kettle and both were okay. Just have to be careful what you're doing.

I use a digital therm that has a probe and what I call a "dangle" (cause it looks like one!) and also has a removable remote that I clip to my apron.

It monitors the internal temp of the meat (via the probe) as well as the temp of the box (via the dangle) and can alert to either temp changing so I can step in and pay attention to what needs to be done.

The audible can be hard to hear for some of us older ears - but it is pretty good at the price. Digital Remote Smart Thermometer (http://www.charbroil.com/Consumer/product_detail_e.aspx?ProductID=2250&CategoryID=36)

of course I always keep both an analog instant read and my Thermapen handy.

I have a wireless that I use and I also have one that came with a turkey fryer (it's about 12 inches long, and somewhat accurate) that I stick through the vent hole on the lid, it just about reaches the grill inside, but does get in the way of food sometimes.

Well...I'll be...it does have a dangle!
Does it report 2 different temps?

I use my remote probe that I use in my smokers, otherwise its the old 1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi method on the kettle that works best for me...

how well does that dangler thermometer work? And what do you do if there isn't meat on there? (other than fix that and put some darn meat on the grill:mrgreen:)

I say drill the hole and be done with it. Tel-Tru all the way!
