What do you use or have for a shelter for your cooker. I used to have a area in a carport for my cooker, But that has been taken for other things. I had a six leg canopy. But the wind liked to move it around. So what do you have ? I would really like to have a concrete base with a roof overhead to keep the rain and snow off of my cooker.

It takes a lot of wind to move ours. It also takes a lot of gasoline to move it. probably not what you are looking for though.:icon_blush:

I've gone through a few elcheapo canopies, then a couple of these metal frame Gazebos over the last few years.

The wind and snow are no match for them. This last snowfall did it for me, and I'm getting serious about building a storage shed with a covered roof on each side and possibly an awning in front. It even has my wifes nod of approval (and she gets the deck back). Vermont or Washington, the weather sometimes doesn't cooperate.

Zilla has one nice shelter for his pit that I'm fond of, and he has pics of the build in his tagline.

Thanks the l;ast picture lookes like mine. I had six poles to hold it up. Three stayed and three went with it. 22 mph wind was not match for my canopy. all bent up now. I saw zillas. would like to know what size it is

:lol::lol::lol:...They come out to play during competition season and occasionally when I do a BBQ for the folks where I work. During the off season I use my BGE and Gasser for the most part. :-P

I highly recommend them for doing great BBQ! :biggrin:

I have been thinking about moving my GOSM into my shed for the winter and windy days. Anyone have thoughts about how it would work if I built and mounted a kitchen exhaust hood over top of of the GOSM and duct it out of the shed for smoke removal?

Well I use part of my deck for my Q shack. Started with 8X8 then added another sheet of plywood and two more posts so now I have an 8X12 shack. I also use two tarps just to make sure there is less chance of getting a leak since I cook alot in the rain and don't want the stuff under it rained on. It has a nice bench to sit on and store stuff in the back and the added lights make it easier to grill in the dark rainy winter evenings. We get pretty windy up here in the mountains but (knock on wood) no problems with weather so far, it has come through like a trooper in the wind, rain and snow.

I like Barbarian's shelter, if only I had the room in my little City Yard...

I have had one of those Pop-up tents used in the yard for about 3 summers, this fall though it finally gave out due to rain and wind.

Now I use a Beach umbrella mod...

Lets see what next summer brings.

I see a few kitchen fan setups with Electric Cookshacks in sheds and even considered something like that myself, but I'd be leery of not enough ventilation for the propane smoker if the flame went out with the gas on.

I had to rig this up for a rib cook last weekend. It had snowed then turned to heavy rain. I knew there was a reason I kept the broken umbrella. Ribs were good too.:-D

Well....I've been an idiot all my life, and fight the weather. I never let weather stop me if I needed to cook something in the smoker. Having said all of that....maybe I'm getting smarter, or just not as much energy, but since I have to build something for the combo broiler, I've decided to extend that to the rest of my cooking devices. The kicker is...I have to wait until the weather cooperates to start construction:biggrin::biggrin:.

Mine are on the patio, enclosed on one side by the deck, another by the house, and two other sides by very large trees. The tree canopies overhang my smoking area so they are always in the shade (especially in summer) and provide rather good wind protection. As for rain, a good rain will come dripping down, but when it starts I have a bit of time for the trees to get good and wet before they start dripping down.

Not sure if you can build something like this setup real quick though. Those trees kinda run on their own time.

I do my Q'ing under the "sunroom" extension; so I got a roof, a concrete slab and partially enclosed on 3 sides (fully enclosed on 1 side by the concrete wall of my walk-out basement).

I had some 1/2" steel conduit and was able to salvage my storm damaged Gazebo frame so I'm breathing a bit easier now.

Had an extra canopy top I picked up off CL last Summer for $20, some nuts and bolts and I'm ready to do some cooking!

I'm thinking I may add a center support for stability during any wild weather from now on.

I met a team at Sugar Creek last year that braced their EZ Up type canopies with 1/2" conduit. If you were in the center of his canopies and looked up it looked like a +. He mounted the ends over joints on the sides tied them in the center, using the tension of the canopy to keep them in place. He also had sandbags hanging from each corner.

I mention it because he did just fine in the 40MPH winds while my sturdy 20x20 carport had to be tied down to Plowboy's trailer (thanks Todd) and every other immovable object I could find. He also said he had been using those canopies for 7 years without a problem. I've gone through a dozen+ canopies like that over the last 7 years so I was impressed. Further, it didn't take him any longer to set or tear down and the 2 10' lengths of conduit for each canopy didn't take up much storage space when disassembled.
