I've been asked several times so just as an FYI, Stan and I are working on trying to get this thing going again in Pleasant Hill for 2009. Stan is working to get a new benefactor lined up to replace the Brain Injury Association. We already have a proclamation and let KCBS know we're planning to keep it on the schedule for the same week as it was this year (first weekend in April). It should be on the schedule by January or early February, once we get the sanctioning paperwork (easy) and fee (a little work) to KCBS. We'll keep you posted. Thanks.

Will this be considered a second year contest or first year since your first year in PV was with Brain Injury Association from Columbia, MO.

I heard that they were picking up there toys and going to play in columbia again. As that is where they are from. That is what I heard in the wind.

I am pretty sure Jeff will find a Great worthy new new benefactor for the Pleasant Hill for 2009. I have see this man do many awesome things in the last few years I believe he can pull it off in 09. I for one will be there to support his contest this year. Roll on brother.

Thanks for the kind words, Scotty but Stan is the one currently working with an organization that his company supports as a charity and we think we have a good shot at it. LOL! I guess if no one wants our money, we can find something to do with it.

Todd, I'm not sure but I'm guessing second year contest. Either way, we fully expect to get around 50 teams anyway. We hope we proved ourselves to teams last April and that no one will hesitate to give Pleasant Hill another shot.

Chris, the BIA-MO is still operating and that's a good thing! Many families in Missouri need their services. Our connection to the organization, though, was ended after the contest in April. As they covered our cost of sanctioning and provided the certificate of liability insurance, we are looking for another organization who wil do the same and get involved with Stan, me and all our volunteers.

Hey Steph, the Dodge Boys PMed me and told me they need a break from you guys and asked if you could be put out by the creek.

Will your contest have a sausage or open category, or is it just the standard four meats? Missed it last year, but planning on coming this year.

Jeff,
Will your contest have a sausage or open category, or is it just the standard four meats? Missed it last year, but planning on coming this year.

We weren't sure last year what to expect and extra categories means extra fees to KCBS. With fewer entries in these other categories, not sure we could make it worthwhile to teams. We will definitely have people's choice again this year. It was a HUGE hit in town. Problem was we didn't have enough meat turned in to cover the public's attendance! Will maybe do it a little differently this year and definitely change at least one category. Last year, it was wings and brisket. Will probably change to wings and pulled pork as pork is cheaper and will allow teams to bring more. Plus since we allowed brisket to be cooked prior to arriving for people's choice, pork reheats nicer IMO if we switch to that. And I believe it goes farther.

KC_Bobby
12-09-2008, 04:19 PM
I like that with the pork!

Is the wind going to blow from the south, west or north that weekend? I'd like to request a spot that has our back to the wind.

thanks

Yes actually so... weird you mention it! Stan has been working his rear off to get this launched for us and just about an hour from now, he'll be dropping off our sanctioning fee and forms along with our insurance certificate to the KCBS office. We already have our own proclamation from the Governor's office from last year when we got one as a "just in case". So we're all set!

Smokin' On Big Creek 2009 will take place April 3-4, 2008 in Pleasant Hill. This year, we will be working to raise funds and awareness for The March of Dimes. Most probably know this but the March of Dimes' mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.

We will have the Web site up and running again soon (www.SmokinOnBigCreek.com (http://www.SmokinOnBigCreek.com)) along with entry forms.

Further details will be forthcoming! We look forward to another highly successful event in Pleasant Hill this April!

Just an update - we've gotten a few sponsors lined up and working on more. Due to fewer sponsors this year, it looks like we may be without a band on Friday night which I'm a little disappointed in... it gives the public coming out for the People's Choice a more festive atmosphere. We're still working on that. So far, it seems that's the only thing we'd be lacking from last year.

To date, we already have five teams entered which is ahead of last year's pace. I have also already gotten nearly 100% CBJs who have responded to my email or emailed me from the KCBS Web site. Hope to get some more entries this week! Thanks for your support of the March of Dimes!

I have spoken to Bob Walkenhorst of "Steve, Bob and Rich" / "The Rainmakers" fame. He said The Rainmakers don't play together any longer but he and a buddy, Jeff Porter, play for about $750 for two hours and can add a bass player and the drummer from The Rainmakers (Pat Tomek) for $1500. I think they're a little out of our price range. The band we had last year I really like a lot (http://www.projectchameleon.net/). I think they were $1200 for 3 1/2 hours. Stan and I were discussing the possibility of a sponsorship - one business to sponsor the band. I think the band makes people's choice a better draw. I'm open to suggestions.

Correct me if I'm wrong but if you get something for your donation, it isn't tax deductible, right? Like contest entry fees... you get to enter a contest so technically it isn't deductible... but that being said, the IRS would be hard pressed to determine you got something in return for your donation to Kookers Kare.

Usually on the front of the certificate notes any restrictions imposed, if we were told of any... In general, you get a standard spot in the "free" entry.... Just like the Royal isn't going to give me my normal spot and power free, just cuz I won it  That would be nice though. That would put me $2K ahead!!!

Yea, raffles, auctions, etc are typically not write offs. anytime you are expecting to gain additional value from the donation... it isn't deductible.

Got two more entries and two more judges today... we're up to fifty CBJs (need about ten more) and 12 teams (need about 36 to 38 more!!!). If you're planning on competing here, we'd like to get filled up ASAP so we can concentrate more on doing the little things that will make this a great contest (like getting a lot more sponsors!!!) so get your entries in as early as you can. Thanks and see you in a few weeks!

Thanks to Stan, we now, as of this morning, have another major sponsor for the contest... Save-a-Lot Food Store here in Pleasant Hill shocked us with their interest and good sized donation! And we did some dealing and now he will also be offering pre-ordering of meat at a reduced price for all teams interested. We looked over his stuff this morning when we went in to meet with him and he carries Choice Excel full packers in various sizes, nice looking chicken and spares (forgot the brand) that are not injected with any solution of salt and water! He also carries babybacks but is currently out as they fly out of the store for some reason. Butts look to be good but they're all sliced in half so we didn't see full ones... but they will be available. We'll post contact info on our Web site soon at www.SmokinOnBigCreekBBQ.com (http://www.SmokinOnBigCreekBBQ.com). He said he'd go about 6% over what it costs him to get it so it should save you some $$$. We're lookin' out for you guys!

Check and free entry certificate ... have been given to Cliff Clavin's colleagues.

Well you see, Norm, it's like this . . . A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Now, as we know, excessive intake of alcohol kills brain cells.. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. And that, Norm, is why you always feel smarter after a few beers.

We have received 39 entries now and have several more verbals. Get your entries in soon before we run out of space.

Not counting the "verbals" (come on, Lee!!! Hurry up!!!), we have only nine spaces left as of tonight.

Also, we need some People's Choice entries! Last year, we had 18 wing entries and 11 brisket entries. So far this year, we only have 10 wing entries and 6 pork entries. Come on folks, it's for charity!

Possible objections:

1. "We don't have time to serve it." (we collect it and serve it for you)

2. "The locals always win those people's choice events." (Not here! We collect it and assign a blind number and ONLY Stan and I will know what number belongs to each team.)

3. "It costs money for the meat." (Thanks to Jeff Spurgeon, who is buying most of the meat, it's a lot cheaper here than other contests! Each pork entry gets one pork butt free. Each wing entry gets 3 to 4 pounds of wings free.)

4. "There's no time to cook pork before 6pm on Friday night." (If you're Bubba or Jeff, sure there is! If you AREN'T Bubba or Jeff, you can cook your people's choice pork sometime before the contest, freeze it and thaw/re-heat once you get here. The public will only know it's some of the best BBQ they've ever had! We HIGHLY recommend you bring minimum of two pulled pork butts, possibly three!)

5. "$15 is too much to spend on top of KCS entry and possibly kids Q too." (Can't help you there! Just win and it's free! )

6. "It's for charity. I don't like charities." (I can't help you there either. You're probably going to hell! j/k)

Regardless, parks and rec crews will then be out with city snow plows pushing that snow off the field and over the back drop off at the fairgrounds. I was joking when I suggested it... the parks and rec director was not.

Just saw the predicted snows for this Saturday and Cass County was square in the 8-12 inch ring. Stan says snow is better than rain. I'm trying to buy into that belief.

EDIT: They just said if the low pushes farhter south than expected, the major snow willbe south of us. I'm hopeful!

Question for teams entered... if you're like us, the last thing you want to deal with is that damned BBQ meat after a comp! We love nothing more than getting rid of it, either to sponsors or to our neighbors when we get home. We've been thinking about something maybe you'll be interested in: Would anyone be interested in donating your leftover comp meat to be auctioned off to the highest bidder with proceeds going to March of Dimes and the Meals on Wheels program? Basically, we'd need to know when you get in on Friday what categories and how much of each you'd be able to donate and we could auction it off on Friday evening with the winners paying then and able to come back on saturday to pick it up after turn-ins. I think it would help to have some info from each participating team about how long they're been competing, awards, championships, etc... anything that might drive up the bids.

So.. any takers? I'll also email the list of teams over the weekend to get an idea and let everyone know if there's enough interest to make it work. We could also include it in our raffle instead.

P.S. We could also get you a receipt for donation from the March of Dimes for your contribution to a 501(c)3.

Went to "Save-a-lot" grocery in Pleasant Hill this afternoon to take advantage of the great meat prices available to contest teams. Only meat left to pick-up for the contest were ribs, and I am very glad that we stopped in, and made the trip!
Picked out some very nice spares (Excel & Hormel) in cry-o-vac. Manager on duty was very nice to let me hoard through the 3 cases they had on-hand to get what we like! Was not dressed warm enough to be in that cooler for 20 minutes or so! :frown:
Anyway, we walked out with 5 slabs @1.59/lb. Total bill of $37.29! This was their cost + 10% discount! Excellent price and quality!

Looking forward to this weekend!

The Q'chen is loaded, I hope to be on the grounds by 6:45 with it. Jeff, if I bring my chicken thighs, will you prep em?

If you want Jeff to prep your thighs, you better get there earlier:lol:

I'll even give the Brethern one of my 2 best secrets. The best way to make good brisket, is to hand feed pellets into the cooker and have very wide temp swings of at least 200 degrees each hour for 15 hours. I cooked it so long, that I had to turn in the whole flat just to get 6 slices.

Now that's funny bobby. Wait til you actually get to enjoy the mods we did Friday. I think you will like them. But hand feeding pellets is fun too... :o)

Great showing, considering the adversity you guys had with your cookers. you guys had a GREAT weekend. Congrats!!!

Been there!!! Placed in ribs and pork as I recall. Adversity builds champions. Today, the FEC that had our ribs ran out of pellets as we were doing Kid's Q. We had to turbo cook them to get anything in. If you remember how bad I cussed my ribs at Kearney the year I won, you'll know about how this morning went down when I came back to a barely warm cooker, half cooked ribs, with less than two hours to turn in.

With that said... that turbo cook was courtesy of Jeff - KC Can Crew. He and Mark G. both took time out of thier morning routines to share hot cookers with us... by means of dragging barrels to our site so we could immediately get our ribs back on track. It doesn't get any better than that, folks. Todd and I were lucky to have such great friends to have our backs.

I posted this on Facebook, but I thought that this should be shared within the Brethren too:

Andy, if it wasn't for you coming over for some help and words of advice ... our brisket turn in could have been used as a shock absorber. Thanks bro!

The members of this forum are awesome. We had a great day because of assistance from the competition/brethren. And I'd also like to shout out to Pickled Pig for posting their chicken steps. While we didn't get anywhere near a call in it, it sure did look pretty and it's definately a step in the right direction for us.

Thanks to all the Teams that came out! We hope you had a great time. I really want to thank the volunteers that worked so hard! Vern, MooCow and Just Pullin Pork!!!! As you know them along with some of their kids and spouses.
Thanks to those who judged the contest! We hope you enjoyed it as well
I also want to thank Kookers Kare! Craig the donation from Kookers Kare to our food pantry was very unexpected but I know they appreciate it so much. That completed filled their freezers.
To all that donated canned goods and other nonperishables we collected 50% more than last year. I got a call from the person that runs the local Food Pantry and he told me that the generosity for the teams, judges and public has restocked their shelves and they greatly appreciate it.
Lastly, I want to thank our spouses that put up with us the last couple weeks while getting ready for the contest. They were awesome!

I am so glad that this crappy weather held off! I think it is time for a nap! See many of you next week in Osage City!

I didn't have the energy to post last night. By the time we got home from dinner and unloaded, I was a zombie. Went to bed at 10 PM last night and woke up at 11:30 this morning! Anyway, I want to reiterate what Stan said... absolutely GREAT job by our volunteers! I haven't seen 'em all of course but I bet our's are some of the tops in barbeque! You guys ROCK and made this contest what it is! Stan and I had the vision of what we wanted to do but people like Vern, Jon, Shane, their sons, and many of our local friends you all don't know, along with the staff of the Pleasant Hill Parks and Recreation Department all worked their asses off this weekend and we think you all are incredible! We are quickly becoming known as a very cooker-friendly contest and these folks are why!

Also, BIG, BIG thanks to Todd and Steph for your donations to our raffle AND especially your hosting our sponsors and giving them each sauce and rub for our "Professional BQ EXperience" on Friday night! you guys were a hit! And Rich and Bunny, you guys provided a great judging insight to them and your song was great! Thanks for giving each of them some of your sauce as well!

Also, congrats to everyone getting called yesterday! I was proud of all of you, especially Captain! We hope you enjoy that GC award! I almost quit organizing for a shot at that! LOL!

I owe Exe-Que-tioners an apology! Bro, you shouldn't have had to call me for water Saturday morning and I should have found a cart and gotten it immediately! Won't happen again!

Thanks again to everyone and we hope to see an even better contest in 2010!

I just wanted to let Jeff, Stan and all of the organizers and volunteers know how much we appreciated their hard work at the contest. My family and I had a great time. There was always someone there if we needed anything...ice, trash picked up, etc.

I'd also like to thank Amy Hays for not running over my wife during turn ins...we might not have made it to the GC. :)

This was a great contest and hopefully we can return to it again next year.

Jeff, you need to change your sig. You've got 364 days to promote next year's contest. Get on it, son!

Glad to be a part of the (so called) Pro BBQ Experience for your sponsors. I thought that was an excellent idea to have them get a first hand look at the competition and teams. The wow factor was when I told them that my fire was small enough to fit in the palm of your hand and then opened the FE to show them. Ooo's and Ah's.

Jeff,
No need for apology about the water! Soon as I got off the phone with you, one of your golf cart runners were there and took care of it promptly!
Again, you and all your help put on one heck-of-a-contest! Was nice to meet the brethren teams that we did. We were cooking beside "Boondoggle" and got to take a tour of their new trailer. Very nice! They have really done a lot of work in the past months and it shows. I think Bob said he is looking forward to a weekend off. From the looks of his work he deserves it!
