For me, the best way to clean a Weber (kettle or WSM) is some Greased Lightning and a green Scotchbrite pad.
I'd be afraid the steel wool would scratch, but mybet the fine stuff wouldn't.

I took my kettle and WSM apart, put them together in one and got a Weber Kettle Smokey Mountain. Then cleaned it and now I can't find it. Here's a pic...

I'd say nice, but still can't find it!

talk about a hijacked post ! i cleaned one of my kettles with what i thought was copper/brass wool. after a bit i looked at it and found it was steel that was colored copper. so much for dollar store stuff. yea, it was magnetic. so i looked closely at the kettle and could find no damage. no scratches, etc. so i'm kinda assuming that the porcelin is much tougher than the wool so just go at it with any reasonably fine steel wool..

Cut bocaoma some slack! I was being a smarta$$, but I've cleaned my share of Webers and steel wool has worked the best! I'll use it to get the buildup off then mask off the rusted/chipped areas, spot paint them with Dupli-Color Engine paint. Then go over the edges of the touchup with the steel wool---Then to make that RED color pop out, I use Meguiars Mirror Glaze #7.

So there!

Please refrain from hijacking our hijacking of Bacoma's thread.

CaptGrumpy

That is standard threadjacking procedure to let the subject get jacked off the rails and then to swoop in with the double-jack to completely help lose all chances of ever getting the subject straightened out and back on track!
