no fear... I'll only be slaying bees with my dull knives upon request. My focus will be on payback for my 70th place chicken after three top 10 calls that cost me a very sweet placing last year.

Umm... I mean my focus will be on assisting Sledneck win a GC

If handling means walking the boxes to the judges tent, that's all I can hope for. I hear the judges there love some Bacon Salt on all categories and it works best dusted on right before eating.

We stayed over the first year... After we cleaned up at the hotel, we ate at all Italian Restaurant/Pizza place pretty close to the hotel (possibly in BLUE BALL, PA) it may have been called Carino's ... Wasn't as good as the stuff here but it was decent and the large bowl of linguini and clam sauce hit the spot after the contest.

My wife also ate that that breakfast place in the parking lot of hotel and said it was good.

As for places to eat, there is always the Shady Maple for mass quantities on the buffet. It's not to far.

That would be me !!!

Blades are oiled and ready to go... Shavings too easy... I'm thinking a cool Dr. BBQ style flat top but giving him some of those goofy late 1980's style lines on the sides.

Clint - you prefer lightning bolt design or the Nike swoosh mark ?

Awww come on guyz!!!! Mind if I bring a back-up? Been shaving noggins for years. There's nothing like the sensation of a freshly-sharpened straightblade after the buzz-cut.

Went to an old-school Barber... and asked him "How are you with a straightblade?" He replied... "Lost 2 customers (bleeding) this morning."

I responded... "Thats a good morning" and hopped in his chair. The warm lather and a single razor slowly curvingf down my skull... was very relaxing. That was the best shave I had.:mrgreen::mrgreen:

I'll bring another set of clippers... oiled and cleaned. fresh blades... and plenty of gel shaving cream!

Hey everyone
We had a great time in New Holland. It was great meeting the guys from R2BQ. Sorry to anyone else we didn't find. My girls did the Kids Q. My youngest didn't place much to her disappointment. My oldest took First place in Beef in the 11-15 (?) age group and Reseve Champion!!! We were flabberghasted! So proud of both of them. They gave it their all. We did our level best NOT to help them at all! (Which is a great deal more than I can say of some of the parents I observed!)

All and all we had a wonderful time.
See some of you at Diamond State in October!

Hers the difference:

Offering other BBQ guys espresso = GAY

Offering women copious amounts of tequila disguised by ice and mix = NOT GAY

Sled I have to agree with you on this one.

This was a great weekend. It was our first time at New Holland and the venue was great. I loved our spot. I don't think you could have asked for better weather.

Sled, Vinny, John, and Bob it was nice meeting you. Those are the names I can remember.

I know my dad, George and I had a great time. Our friend seemed to really really enjoy himself also. Hope everyone else enjoyed themselves as much as we did.

I am too tired to put in the results, if no one does it by the time I get on tomorrow I will post it. Good night everyone.

Great, great, great contest! Six categories is always a bit of a killer, but I loved it. My neighbor was pleasant, I got me another sausage trophy, and I got to hang out with a bunch of great friends!

Pigheaded was amazing with a first chefs choice and a couple other calls, and I got to see lo b slo win in their first whole hog contest ever.

Pulled in a little while ago. A three hour drive took five.

Had a great time meeting some new Brethren, sold my trailer to BBQ Bandit and assisted Sledneck for the weekend.

All I will say is that Sledneck made some really good stuff and presented it well too. I was really dissappointed by the 48th placing. From what I saw and tasted, I thought it deserved much better than the scoresheets showed.

Congrats to all the Brethren who got calls this weekend !!

Congrats to all the Brethren teams that walked. I was thrilled to see WATG? get RGC. This is best run event I have ever been to. For those that havent been there we get set up all over a beatiful park wherever they can fit us.We are basically scattered all over the place. It is such a change from the typical conteset rows and gives it a feel like we are at a big picnic and not a contest. As usual it was great cooking with Vinny and my son Steven. Last week I got a note from Sal (Smoking Ganome) that he was bringing me a gift. The first thing thats runs through mind is that is some wacky thing that probably has to do with the number 13 or something. I get over to his site and it is an R2D2 cooler! I have one that I bring with me to contests that was a Pepsi store display but this thing was a real deal cooler . Thank You Sal it made my weekend that much better.

~WOW!~ What an event... The weather was picture perfect for great food, friends, and BBQ!!!

Supported Swamp Pit BBQ (well... tried too) on my first "inside" look at comp BBQ as their beotch. Thank you Julie, Skip, and Rob for showing me the ropes. Only hoped for better scores.

Congrats on the Walk to the Brothers who were called!

Met several Brothers there... all were wearing smiles and giving away handshakes, welcomes, and answering any questions at the drop of a hat. Sled (and son), Vinny, SIDE, BackPorch, Butthead, SmokinGnome...
apologies to any who were victims to my fading memory.:mrgreen::mrgreen:

PS. Vinny... thank you for the trailer. Made it home in one piece.

What a great contest, I concure with Sled, did he mention the showers and the pool that were available for use, along with the free breakfast. I think the organizers here would even bring you a morning paper on Saturday, but who would have time to read it.

Great job Ron and Clint!

(Which is a great deal more than I can say of some of the parents I observed!)Beth and family

Beth, I judged Kids Q on Friday. I had some very good entries. There was one chicken that I wish I had cooked and turned in, would have done much better.

Maybe I'll get to meet you at Dover.

Congrats everyone, I heard lots of familiar names getting called! As usual, we had a great time this weekend. Really enjoyed seeing the Brethren crew. Whoever we missed this time, we'll have to track you down next time. We're becoming more comfortable doing comps and it's leaving us more time to socialize at each event.

We were real happy to get our best result in pork to date (11th), using a sauce tip that Sled gave us, and we did ok in ribs too (15th). Our chicken that took 2nd at Yardley was only good for 45th and our brisket took a well deserved 33rd (it was a little tough) but all in all, I was happy with it.

Clint, thanks for the stogie. I didn't get a chance to smoke it yesterday but I'll be washing it down with a nice single malt tonight after I get everything cleaned up. It was nice meeting your family too.

Good seeing the R2BQ gang again (and their guest cook) and Julie and the crew. As usual, we had great neighbors. BBQ Guru, Dizzy Pig, Pequea Pullers, Team Verus and everyone else. Good to see them all again. Got to talk with Tiny a little and watg? too, but not for too long.

Speaking of watg?, it seems they had a bit of a grease fire Saturday morning and really smoked the place out. Then we heard Steve (YankeeBBQ / Team Agave) yell over and ask them how many tires they had on the fire. We were cracking up. Then he told them it smelled Italian and asked if those were Pirellis they were burning. I almost pissed myself.

My teamate has our score sheets so I can't post the full results, but I'll do so tommorow if no one has beaten me to it.

Chris, my nephew Moses13 made a pecan pie. It was delicious, but appearance left a little to be desired, so we were stunned by the call.

After they announced 2nd place in chef's choice, I turned to Ron and said "1st place- Pigheaded BBQ" as a goof because our pie was a goopy mess when I tried to put it in the box and 3 people had to talk me into actually turning it in and seeing what happened, since it didn't count toward KCBS. We were absolutely stunned when we got our call that we were laughing the whole way up to the stage because I was about to trash the entire thing right before turn-in.

Anyways, congrats to all who were called. It was also good to meet and see everyone this past weekend.

Clint- Thanks for the stogie on Fri night.

Another great comp at New Holland,, Had a great time, didn't get around to meet all the brethren that was there,, didn't venture around too much, had a good time talking with the gang from backporch, Good seeing Shotgun Fred around from the bbq guru.. We took a surprising 9th place in sausage, using my homemade sausage. And then an 11th in chicken. I would love to taste a first place brisket,, our brisket we thought was awesome perfectly tender, flavorful... but the scores weren't there,, not sure what they are looking for,, but oh well,, gotta keep trying. I went rather spicy on the ribs,, apparently it was a bit much. I do need allot of work on presentation,, that is one place we struggle for sure. But anyhow, all in all, a great weekend.. I gotta walk around more and meet more of ya. Congrats to all that got calls,, look for ya at the next one.

Dinner was awesome with Sled, Ganome, Julie, my crew, etc, though I could have put an all-you-can eat joint out of business!

So glad I made the power move to stay an extra night. As for 17th place, for some reason the score sheets started with the first category instead of overall so Sal and I had a good time figuring out why both of us finished in 17th overall (Julie/Swamp Pit were 19th in sausage but thought it was 17th). The two-peat win in sausage was awesome and it was definitely my best cook ever. Can't wait for next year!

I don't know but it looks like you guys have come up with a new way to garnish a turn in. I like it. It's quick, easy and it makes use of the materials at hand. One thing I would like to bring up.

I was told by Julie that I would be judging the Kids Q and said Great! Judging is always fun and what better then to judge and compete in the same weekend. So off I went to the judges "tent" and sat down for some Q judging. As the first box passed over for our appearance marks a terrible feeling came over me. I thought about some cute little 8 year old girl crying because some judge was mean to her....I saw a little boy asking his Mommy "Why didn't they like my food?" I found myself torn between being a good guy and not judging accordingly when I saw mistakes or tasted poor food and judging properly and how I was instructed to at my CBJ class. How could I bring myself to hit a kid with a 5? Then again how couldn't I? It was truly tough.

I do not like to coddle kids and I feel it is unfair to them to always sugar coat everything but then again a kid who put the time in and isn't as skilled as their adult counterparts doesn't deserve to be discouraged either.

I asked the table captain to check into the possibility of comment cards. I felt it would be easier for a kid to accept a low mark if they were told why they received it. Without the opportunity to understand their mistakes some might be discouraged due to the blind marking. I also heard later that some Kids Q tells you what age group you are judging which would help when placing a mark. I mean what would be a 7 for a 9 year old might actually become the 6 it should be for a 15 year old. Who knows that may even be wrong.

I had a great time judging but it wasn't as much fun as i thought it would be. I did mark nearly as tough as i would for an adult comp and still wonder if I crush some kid with the marks I gave them. I don't know what they could do to change it. I may have tainted my table after the first box. Some were commenting on the food and I interjected with how hard it was to judge critically since they were kids. Many stated they hadn't looked at it that way.....question is did they afterwards.

Any comments would be appreciated.

I could see where that would be an issue Skip. I think that's something that should be made clear at the judges meeting. If the rep doesn't bring it up, someone should ask, just so everyone's on the same page. If the all entries are being scored using consistent criteria, it's fair no matter which way they say to do it.

Any comments would be appreciated. Most of Stevens scores were 6,7,8, & 9's with the excepting of one judge who gave him a 944. That was a bit pathetic if you ask me considering the judge knew it was a kid. I have turned a lot worse food than he did and I have yet to receive a 4

I too judged the Kids Q. At the meeting, we were told to keep in mind that they were kids and that there were to be NO DQ's, but not to give all 9's either as they wouldn't learn anything that way. I may have been too soft, but I didn't give anything lower than a 7.

If my chicken was as good as the first entry I ate, I would have done much better than 33rd.

Not to stir the pot but I think that they should have the age groups seperated. What is a poor appearance for a 15 year old is different in my opinion than an 8 year old. JMHO.

I also judged the kids Q. I was a little easier on them but then again most of their stuff looked great at my table at least. I don't think I gave a score below a 5. I was not trying to coddle them, but I also didn't want to discourage a kid from trying it again. If they get discouraged Q will eventually die out and I would hate to see that happen. That is just how I did it, not saying it is right or wrong.

Great Pics Clint. I also judged the Kids event. I gave mostly 7/8 with a few 6/5- not many of these. Tried not to be too hard. I think a comment card would be good for this and also it would help if you knew the age group
