So I have been obsessing about building an UDS and have been talking about it at work. I guess the right person heard me cause a girl I work with said that her husband never used his smoker. She called him and he said he would be glad to get rid of it. He dropped it off at work today. Wouldn't take any money or anything because its got a little bit of rust. I was wondering if anyone out there knew what kind it was? It looks similar to a WSM (I think) but I don't know what it is.

That sure looks like a WSM. I am sure the guys around here will offer up proof on the matter but to my eyes it looks like an older WSM.
Great score.

That's a WSM. What's the letter code on the top vent? Looks like an oldie. Good score. How's the inside?

That there is a genyouwine WSM! Check the top vent and look for a letter date code stamped into it.

And a little history to help solve the mystery! Our own Harbormaster can hip you to the oldest WSM still in use.

I haven't ever smoked anything before I am hoping that its as great as it seems. I will definately build a UDS if I catch the bug from the WSM.

I picked up a WSM like that from a co-worker that found it on the back deck of a house he purchased. He was using it to store fireworks in. Mine had no letters stamped on the vent and also had the wooden handle. The funny thing is, it also had rust on the door like that one, I wonder if the older ones had that in common. I had to order new bottom vents and the door from Weber. Great find, BTW.

A wsm not that old, just left outside in a damp environment. Dude, nice score! Go invest in some SOS pads and work on them grates an that door. After that, I'd spray some bbq paint on the edges, and your in business brother!

Great score! The newer doors are aluminum, so if you replace it you won't have any rust in the future. Also, I agree that the middle section is upside down. Make sure you flip it over before your first cook.

I dont use a WSM but I recall someone saying that if you flip that door over you get a better seal.
From what Ive heard about WSM's, it's all in the seal - getting a good air-tight seal then adjusting your air flow. This is what the Brinkmans suck at and why the WSM's are so good.

You have a very very old WSM. I would guess it will have a date code on the vent of C, D, or E most likely. DO NOT change out the door for an aluminum one. The legs will be steel also. It looks like someone replaced the wood handle with a nylon one. Too bad.
She's a keeper.
*** EDIT ***
Upon further review, the handle is still wood. You have an old WSM that was neglected. Looks like it sat outside w/o a cover. Give her a good home, will ya? or send her to me.

Well I got home and it turns out its a "c" model so it is from 1981 I can't believe its in such good shape for being outside all that time. Can I use it with rust on the door until I can get a wire brush drill bit or will it harm the food? Also I need replacement food grates does anybody know a place to get them cheap?

http://virtualweberbullet.com/partschematic.html try here. The grates are wsm specific. Usually dealers don't carry wsm parts. Are the grates rusted through or just dirty. I wire brush, then put in self cleaning oven to clean. Oil after cleaning, to prevent rust. the rust on the door won't hurt anything. brillo pad and oil and it will be good to go.

Great find bro...the rust on the door will not harm the food...a wire wheel on a drill motor or wire brush will do the trick...maybe even steel wool depending on the severity of the rust. You can get replacement racks at Home Depot, Ace Hardware, or on-line from Weber. A lot of the Brethren here have WSM's (myself included) they are one of the best smokers in the world. Here is another place for you to visit as well http://www.virtualweberbullet.com/index.html Happy Smokin'! :-P

Great score - couldn't get a better smoker to cut your teeth on - a little practice, and you'll be smoking with the best of'em. Clean her up and throw some food in the thing!
