View Full Version : My first Craig's List purchase

Hey all - I've just moved from the vertical world to the horizontal. I've been watching Craig's list to see if any smoker's would become available in the San Diego area.
Saw one come up for $145 - didn't want to spend quite that much.

Two weeks later another popped up for $100. A BBQ Galore Bar-B-Chef with the "temperature package" (a decent temp gauge) - $300 value. It was bought in Oct 2007 and only used 6 times. I asked for a photo and it looked really familiar - it was the same one from earlier, but the price lowered - sometimes it pays to wait....

So I drove out to Vista, took a look at it, passed over $100 and drove home with a new toy. http://www.cbbqa.org/forum/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif

This will be my intermediate pit step till I can afford a big beast like a Spicewine.

I've got the "Bandera 101" sheet for Mods to make. I am open to any other tips or tricks you all might have.

Nice score Tim! Unless it's an older Bar-B-Chef a lot of the mods are already done.
I like the stainless table on those! Take a look on the CBBQA site for pits for sale too.
craigslist is my friend!

How about a few pics of the inside... main chamber, sfb, etc.... I have 2 CharGriller Smoking Pros 2/sbfs, and have modded them slightly to get the most out of them.

I would think my mods might help you, if they haven't already been done.

I will have to do that MrGrumpy - Once I can get it out of the truck!

I need a few strong brethern to help. I'm on my own with it and my bad neck at this point. My wife would have been some help, but she totally messed up her back this week and can hardly move around the house - even with a cane and heavy meds.

But enough woe. I'll get it out, snap a few pics and post em back here.

Currently this is a totally stock unit.

How about some pics of the mods you speak of?

Thanks.

Hey Tim, here is a pic of one of the mods I did on my CharGriller. It's a basket that we built to put in the sidebox. It worked great. I also rolled up some sheet metal and shoved into the exhaust so it would extend the pipe to grate level.

Jason -
Not sure what happened to the pic. I think a basket is one of the first things I'm going to work on - zero tools or skills for welding, so will have to rig something else up.

This model already has the exhaust pipe down at grate level, so that's nice.

Also - I did just get it out of the truck on my own. Guess I just had to think about it for a bit and see what interesting technique I could come up with. It was me, and two Cal King box springs that we are getting rid of. Slid right out, onto the "bed" and then I just tipped it up on it's legs.

A few little rust spots here and there - looks like the previous owner cleaned it with a hose. I'll get her cleaned up and then get to figuring out what I am doing with it.

Here you go! Finally got it out of the F-150 today. Easier than I thought - just had to think it through a bit.

I'll have to sneak in some cooking time this week.

I found the secret to Craig's List. I agree that it can be hard to find what you are looking for. The trick is to use an RSS Reader. If you figure our how to do that you are set. I use the Google Reader for RSS feeds. http://www.google.com/reader

Be sure to create a Google Account if you don't already have one. Then log in.

Then on Craig's List you can create a search. I had one for the San Diego Craig's List, searched for "BBQ" with the cost under $150. I also did another for "Smoker" under $150.

When you do a custom search, you will see on the bottom right of the results screen the letters "RSS" - highlighted. If you click on this it will bring you to a page about adding the search to Google Reader. There is actually a big fat button to do it for you!

Now when ever you open up Google Reader you will automatically see just the Craig's List items that fir your search. No need to go do a search each time, or did through all the items trying to find something.

I did this for 2 weeks and found this baby.

You will still have some junk in there - but it is a lot easier to filter through 3-5 junk items instead of hundreds!

You click on the title of the item you are interested in, it will open up and show some of the text of the item. If you want to see more, or see if there is a photo, you click on the blue linked title and it will take you directly to the item in Craig's List. It's easier than it sounds.

Good luck, and happy hunting!

Tim,

Your vent is already down to the cooking grates. That is one I had to do to my CG's to even out the temps. I am cooking right now, and have 2 Maverick ET-73's going.... Right now they are both sitting on 282 degrees. The most I have seen them off is 11 degrees from one end of the cooking grate to the other....

I didn't see anything in the firebox to hod your coals/wood etc. Does it just sit on the bottom???? I would hope there is something to elevate the fire so that ash would not smother the fire out. That is one for sure on the CG's to do list.

It looks like you should be pretty well set. If you plan to move yours much, you might consider the wheels mod like mine... it sure makes it a LOT easier to move on uneven ground.

Keep us posted.

BTW, nice looking guard dog for the smoker....

Tim,

Thanks for the info.... I just set mine up and BINGO.... I got a listing for a smoker that I am thinking of coordinating with my smoker that I am going to build. I was thinking of using a GOSM style for a warming box on top of my fire box.

There is one listed for $20 in the hit that I found, and it was just listed about 5 minutes before I set it up. I would have probably not found it otherwise..... thanks again.

There is a grate that sits on the bottom - but there is next to no space under it. I will be building a fire-basket for the fire box. That's step one, then I should be ready to roll.

That was an issue with the CG's also.... I took a piece of expanded metal, and placed it on top of the cooking grate in the sfb. It worked great, except that it was almost even with the opening of the door, so every time I dumped hot coals in, some would always seem to find their way out....

So I then ran a couple of bolts through the side walls about half way down and put the expanded metal there. Works great now....

Tim- I have an earlier model of the Bar B Chef without any mods. I had to extend the chimney down to the grate, move the temp guage to grate level and add a baffle from the firebox to the cooking chamber to help disperse the heat when it blasts into the cooking chamber, I also got a piece of expand steel 12x24 from Home Depot and bent it up on both ends to form a "U" shape with a flat bottom to use as a charcoal basket. This works real well using the Minion Method. I get about 4-5 hours burn time at 235ish. I really like the cooker but it is small, but it is great for the backyard and small gatherings. Enjoy it.
