We have the reg. Sears stores at the malls, but we also have a return and distribution center. Well every year they have a spring clearance sale. Scratch & dent and customer returns. So I went to see what trouble I could get into looking through the sale items. I was looking at some of the grills when I saw 2 boxes with big tears down the sides. So I asked about them because they looked like kettles. They were.:-D They were these 22 1/2 kettles.

These are reg price of $49.95, on sale right now for $39.95, not a Weber but........ I'm thinking lids, grates and handles for a UDS. Since the boxes weren't marked, the salesman went to get a price from the manager. The manager came back and went through the motions of looking at the boxes and the damage. The bottom of each kettle has a small crease and scratch in the paint about 6" long. Well I waited and the salesman came back and said I could buy one for $20 or both for $35. I almost ran over the salesman trying to get to the register to pay before someone changed their mind.:-D:-D When I got home and opened one of the boxes and tried the lid on my Weber kettle and it fit perfect.:-D So, I guess that I have to build another UDS.:-D I can't let these kettles go to waste.:biggrin:

Hey! Thanks, OSD! I totally forgot about the nice less expensive Companion Kettle option. I think I'll just go out and get me one of those instead of a used Weber.

I see that there is a 22.5 inch model and a 26 inch model too!! Holy boogers! Here's the link http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_07116241000P?vName=Lawn+%26+Garden&cName=Grills I wonder which would be the best lid for my UDS... Has anyone tried using the 26inch lid for their drum?

OSD I would like to know if it will really fit a drum? Because that lid is 22.5" outside and a kettle is 23" outside and 22.5" inside.:?:

IT depends on the drum...and nothing that a little freindly persuasian wouldn't fix.

I used the same kettles for my 2 drums. The lids would not fit the drums. I probably should have cut the drum right below the lip, but instead I just ground it down until I git a nice tight fit.

I'am going to take a chance and buy one and cut the lip off my drum.

papalion, as I said it is the exact size as a Weber kettle. I tried it on my Weber kettle and it fit perfectly. :-D As for fitting on a drum, it would depend on the drum because they are not all the same size. But, it didn't fit the one I built already. But it did fit the 2 I just got.:-D

Why would you cut off the lip of the barrel ? You could always cut the lip off the bottom part of the kettle and put it on the drum. It should set right in.

Besides the lid, There are a lot of parts in it to put to use. 1 cooking grate, 1 fire grate ( 16" ) and 2 extra handles.
On the bottom part of the kettle there is a small lip that goes in about 3/8" that the fire grate sits on. It's molded into and is the bottom of the kettle. It's 16" wide and 2" deep. I took a cutoff wheel and sliced this bottom part off. There is 4 holes in it to attach the legs. I ran bolts up through these and with some washers and nuts it made a perfect ash pan and fire grate. All I have to do now is put some expanded metal around the top for the basket.

That ring above the charcoal grate makes wrapping the expanded metal challenging. I cut it off, cut about 1/3 out of it and used it as a handle to lift the basket out.
