After many years of looking, talking to owners, talking to manufacturers, wishing, and researching what would best fit our needs, we have ordered a Bates Custom Pit.

Here are a few pictures of the early construction of our new Bates Custom Pit that is being built by Lone Star Custom Pits and Grills. Steve and Tom have been GREAT to work with and have always been Johnny on the spot to answer emails, return phone calls, etc. Just a real pleasure to work with and from the looks of things, they are building one fine pit

Thanks Steve and Tom and I will post more updates as I get them. Hopefully we will be picking us this "monster" in mid-May.

I see where you're going, planning on using it to teach fire behavior classes so you can get the tax write off huh? Good thinking there Chief! I'm a Compartment Fire Behavior Instructor so I can come down and help you with that, of course it'll cost you some ribs, brisket, Guinness, and Scotch!

Wyatt, when you get ready to order yours, just tell them you want one bigger than the Chief's. Next year for your birthday ask for donations to your pit fund.

You must be the builder? Looks good. Obviously, if you want a BIG smoker, it has to come from Texas.

That thing is awesome! Think you could shoot me some pics of the entrance to the upright from the barrel? Or atleast describe it to me? I'm having trouble figuring out how big the hole should be between the two and where it should be located. Thanks.

You'd better go with a Diesel that has a Jake brake to pull (& stop) that monster. Seriously, what is the dry weight and tongue weight going to be when it's done?
How many axles of what weight rating & are their going to be brakes on all wheels?

Well now, it's impressive as hell BUT to be a proper Texas Q trailer reckon the tail end ought to be more like a covered stock trailer so you can haul the fresh beef with ya!

How many axles of what weight rating & are their going to be brakes on all wheels? We haven't weighed it yet but it should come in at less than 5000#. It will be on twin 3500# axles with brakes on both. Here is a a finished cooker that is very similar to the Chief's pit. http://www.lonestarcustompits.com/beyond.html
I pulled it up to Minnesota with ease. It increased my fuel consumption by about 20%
